We are from Rye. We’re from bourbon. We are from Rome. Red wine supplies are running out catastrophically, not to mention vermouth. You know which bottle I’m talking about. For the most ambitious cocktails you have bought, you only make two. Chartreuse green. Yellow chartreuse. Luxardo Maraschino liqueur. Benedictine. There are also spirits that were all the rage years ago but found their way to the back of the cupboard. Domaine de Canton. Saint Germain. X-rated drinking from slumber parties. Bottles that were souvenirs or gifts: the ouzo your sister bought in Greece; Thai whiskey that your friend brought from Nepal (okay, that’s me).
During my forties I decided to embrace these bottles. Instead of defaulting to classic cocktails or highballs, drinking these unusual spirits may require some creativity; Or, conversely, recognition of something simpler. If you decide to go this route, you can turn it into an opportunity to build community while everyone is physically apart. I asked a Facebook group for suggestions on cocktails using yellow chartreuse, and it was interesting to hear what other people had in mind: I’d be filming The Naked and Famous one night, and the next night I’d be looking at Laphroaig plans a (I don’t want U I don’t have any peach liqueur, so I’ll have to improvise). I drank seltzer water and a bottle of bitters I found (hint: grapefruit is better than black almonds here).
I think this whole Marie Kondo thing is a festive way to stock our wine cabinet. If there are bottles left untouched after the quarantine period, it’s time to say goodbye to them. Hopefully the next months will offer us even more opportunities to review not only the wine cabinet, but the memories that led to the collection of these bottles. We may not be able to travel to Scotland now, but when we dip into this whiskey we can at least remember the days of Islamic travel. I think of my in-laws when I drink the fancy scotch they bought us for Christmas years ago, or open many bottles of Wiggle in our barrels, and remember the many trips I took to Pittsburgh with my sister. Gin aged in rye mezcal barrels.
