Traditionally, naan is baked in a hot clay oven, but to make it accessible to anyone at home, I modified this recipe slightly so that it bakes perfectly on the stovetop.
How To Make Homemade Naan
You’ll love this bread for its pillowy soft and fluffy texture! This bread is very stretchy and perfect for soaking up all the curries and chutneys and can also be used to make wraps. Air bubbles will form in the bread as it bakes. Unlike its cousin, the Middle Eastern flatbread, where naan forms one large pocket, naan forms many small bubbles, and that’s what makes it special.
Herb & Garlic Homemade Vegan Naan
Of course, this naan tastes amazing, especially when coated with herb garlic butter. I always recommend eating it fresh right after baking, you will love it!
Both types of bread are flat breads, made from yeast dough. Pita bread can be made with yeast or baking powder/soda, as can naan. The consistency is completely different because the naan is made from cheese and butter, and the fat content in the recipe makes the bread richer and softer than pita bread. Also, while pita bread usually has a large pocket, naan bread creates a lot of small air bubbles when baked.
It’s also important to note that naan is an Indian bread and pita is a Middle Eastern bread, but can also be found in Mediterranean countries.

I tested the recipe with more water, less water, more flour, less flour, more Greek yogurt, less Greek yogurt, more oil, less oil, etc. You understand what’s important. I find that the more flour, the tougher the naan becomes. With less flour and more water, the naan is lighter and more bubbly. This is a sticky dough, but we firm it up with some flour on the work surface.

My favorite homemade naan recipe involves the basic bread ingredients (flour, water, and yeast) plus yogurt, eggs, and lots of baking powder to make the bread extra soft and chewy. I also like to use a bit of honey as a natural sweetener for bread. If you’re craving garlic naan, I include a (optional but highly recommended) garlic butter sauce that you can spread on the warm bread right after baking, and I always like to sprinkle fresh parsley on top . And a pinch of sea salt flakes.

Make the dough by hand: Instead of using a food processor, complete step 1 in a large mixing bowl. Add flour, yogurt, salt, baking powder and eggs and mix until well combined. Then place the dough on a floured work surface and knead with your hands for 3 to 4 minutes until smooth. (The dough will still be a little sticky, but it should form a ball that pulls away from the sides of the mixing bowl. If it’s too sticky, add a little more flour while mixing.)
