Before we dive in, note that my travel credit card page has a comprehensive guide to credit card points. This post is a fun little anecdote that keeps things real.
50000 Chase Points To Dollars

Now for the juicy stuff: How I redeemed a 50,000-point Chase Sapphire Preferred bonus (after spending $4,000 in three months — easy if you can rent out your credit card) at an all-inclusive resort for about $1,100.
Is The Chase Sapphire Preferred Worth It?
But my “potential strategy” changed when I started browsing the portal. Instead of phasing them in over time (5000 here, 8000 there) while spending weekends in various US cities, I started thinking about how I could spend $200 or $300 here and not be too taxed financially.
In other words, I spend a few hundred dollars a month on travel expenses, so it doesn’t really bother me.
But shelling out a few (like MANY) hundred dollars per session really hurts, and I couldn’t imagine dropping more than $500 on an international-style trip without some serious planning.
So my strategy was to destroy the entire taco in one go for an incredibly awesome experience that I wouldn’t otherwise pay for.
Best Chase Credit Cards Of June 2024
Being a slave to the charts, I started browsing the Ultimate Rewards portal and tracking my favorites. I had already decided on Cancun, which was only because of the flight fees that weekend, a factor that later became moot since I bought the flights anyway.
But I had a lot of fun with Tomas Cabo last year, so I thought the other side of Mexico might be fun, especially since Mexico Travel Destinations offers a LOT of affordable all-inclusive options, probably the best itinerary.
I wanted to go for three nights, but I realized that I would probably spend a little out of pocket. The Ultimate Rewards portal powers a third-party booking engine (Expedia, I think) so you can see all the hotel listings, their perks, USD price and points redemption.

I found a few 4-star results that looked pretty good, but most required me to spend all my points and an additional $100-$300 to cover all three nights. I didn’t feel like a star with any of them, so I kept looking for a few days and decided to go away for the weekend.
The Chase Travel Portal
This is very important: give yourself time to plan. I really want to find and book everything in one day as I usually travel nearby (during the week) but I have a few days to weigh my options, reading TripAdvisor reviews and looking at my calculator helped a lot. .
*Master key for a weekend trip: Choose the first flight there and the last (or penultimate) flight back. We basically had all of Friday (as we landed at 11am), Saturday and Sunday as we took off around 6:30pm. He helped us make the most of our two night excursions.
When I was about to book a 4 star resort with questionable food reviews, I noticed a resort that looked incredibly nice and was surprisingly out of my price range. I’m sure you know where this is going.
The resort was listed for 44,000 points per night (about $550) on Ultimate Rewards: Hyatt Zilara Cancun. Someone mentioned to me that sometimes a travel partner (in this case Hyatt) will list properties with a lower point on their website.
The Least Kept Secret In Travel: Chase Sapphire Reserve Card
So I went to the Hyatt website with very, very low expectations. Then I saw: the Hyatt Zilara, which was listed at 25,000 points per night. In other words, I had enough points to cover two full nights for a total of 50,000 points compared to the 88,000 it would cost on the Ultimate Rewards portal.
I was excited. I double and triple checked the rules, confirmed with The Points Guy that the transfer ratio was 1:1, then quickly transferred 50,000 points to Hyatt and ordered Zilara. When I checked, the Hyatt bill said the final price was 1, 100, or 50,000 points.
It’s a pretty unique treat to earn 50,000 points on regular spend and be told it’s worth $680, but getting $1,100 worth of points is a completely different treat, especially since (at the time of writing) the Sapphire Card has no annual fee in the first year as it’s effectively free ($95 after the first year; we’ll include the annual fee elsewhere).

Always check with your transfer partner (see Chase’s full list here). Make sure you get the best Ultimate Rewards deal. Usually, but occasionally you will find a gem.
The Best Credit Card For Earning Points Toward Free Travel Is The Chase Sapphire Reserve
The Sapphire Preferred card is literally a no-brainer if you have good credit and want a free vacation (*and pay off all your cards every month with no debt!*).
All-inclusive resorts are an incredible value, and saving money when you go to a country like Mexico will only make your vacation shorter. I have to say that after staying at a 5 star resort with amazing food and fantastic accommodations, I realized that in most cases you get what you pay for (or rather spend your points).
Finally, and perhaps best of all… money is only as valuable as it allows you to live the life you want.
Vacationing with a loved one is the most valuable and memorable way to spend time that I have discovered, and I have never regretted the money spent on travel; I can’t say that about my Louis Vuitton bag, expensive jewelry or fancy clothes. I’ve made many regrettable purchases in the past, and none of them were the ones I experienced on the trip.
