For example, if we believe that pressing a button produces a sound, the sound appears to occur sooner after the button is pressed than if we believe that the events are independent—a phenomenon called “intentional association.”
The Lush team asked 18 highly hypnotizable people to sit in front of a real clock and perform a task as often as they pressed a button, triggering a beep after 250 milliseconds, in three different situations.
When their finger was pulled down inappropriately—with the string attached—they saw the time before the beep as 176 milliseconds. When the string did not retract and they chose the time to press the button, they saw it as 91 milliseconds – indicating intentional binding.
But when they pressed the button because of the post-hypnotic instructions, they saw it as 156 milliseconds—closer to the involuntary than the voluntary point.
