To be fair, the surveys were easy to complete and can be done at home if you have an internet connection. The sites we reviewed were free and required no training or knowledge. Depending on the site, research can be an easy, albeit cheap, way to earn a few bucks, or it can be a boring chore that pays nothing.

Some sites give more than others. We welcome sites that offer paid value for every review and affiliate link. We were afraid of sites that gave us a bunch of confusing points and sent us surveys we didn’t deserve.
Note that demographic and other characteristics determine whether you are eligible for the study. All three of us interviewed in 2017 were urban women in their 20s. Depending on the survey, we may or may not be the right participants. Your situation may lead to different results than ours.
What we found below is that we try to spend five hours a day in each area. On several days, in many areas, there was not enough research to fill an hour. (We did not include this time in all our test hours.)

This site is a research center with an active review process. The dashboard is informative and displays useful features such as your activity and customer support form. The site was above average in the selection of useful surveys. 500 or 1000 points for reviews may seem high at first, but when translated into real income, you will earn 50 cents or a dollar. Also, you can’t cash out until you reach 25,000 points, which is about $25.
This site collects a bit of research, but it stands out. The site has a clean slate, is easy to use, and gives you high points for every test you take. The points system is simple and the dashboard shows you how many dollars your points are worth. But you have to reach 500 points before you can go.
Some survey sites bombard users with information and options — but not Opinion Outpost. Its simple, intuitive website helped us search for each other without much thought. First, we appreciate the site’s direct point system, which works out to 10 cents per point. Most importantly, we actually made money. We made $1.50 an hour at Opinion Outpost and were able to export to Amazon.
This website only provides surveys through Ipson, the market research company it owns. The site offers fewer searches than aggregators, but you stay on iSay for every search, which makes for an easy experience. Sometimes it shows searches you’ve already tried, which is confusing.

This site returned 75 search results, the most of any site we tested. But it had the lowest success rate, 9.33%, and the lowest hourly wage. However, the reasons for the lack of research were often unclear. We were once turned away after being asked to spell the word ‘purple’. (Yes, we spelled it right.)
This site offers many research opportunities, but cancellations often occur. Sometimes we get fired just because we clicked on a survey link. Swagbucks aggregates other people’s surveys, so some sites it sends you are better than others. It takes a while to find the details, but the site’s extensive rewards marketplace offers hundreds of options, including gift cards, sweepstakes, and PayPal payments.
Unlike many other sites, Toluna allows users to choose their research topics, such as electronics or travel, which made the work more interesting. However, this did not limit his source of income. When we redeemed our points for cash, we were paid just 71 cents per hour—one of the lowest rates of any site we tested. Our five hour points weren’t enough to buy cheap gift cards.
New users get a $5 bonus after verifying their email address with InboxDollars. But that didn’t make up for the paltry amount we earned per hour in our research — 41 cents, the lowest of the 12 sites we tested. Sometimes, instead of sending us a survey, websites send us ads that ask for our address, phone number, and date of birth.

Without a website, research salaries may be small compared to other career options. For example, the federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, and our hourly wages range from 41 cents to $2.03 an hour. Many survey sites also require a minimum amount of data before they can be returned for rewards. Most sites did not reach this minimum number after five hours of operation. (You may want to consider other hobbies that are rewarding.)
Over time, we have provided important personal data in these research areas. We have repeatedly disclosed our birthdays, zip codes, income, health status, race, residence and more. And after spending hours in a Q&A session, we didn’t think much of giving that information.
“The biggest risk is not knowing how this data will be used,” says Eva Velasquez, president and CEO of the Information Theft Center. You’re really putting yourself at the mercy of these sites and saying, “OK, I trust you to be a good steward of the information I’m sending you.”
According to Velasquez, our information can be used for suspicious research or, for example, sold to health insurance companies. Or they can be stolen, which is a risk for any website that stores personal information. Most of the information shared seemed innocuous – like our shopping habits and travel plans. But information like your date of birth and other sensitive information can be used to steal your identity. So keep this in mind when answering the questions.

Despite the disadvantages of online research, some people may still consider it a good choice. In addition, there are no obstacles to entry, they can be done from anywhere with an Internet connection.
Don’t share. Skip the test if you need to enter your Social Security number, bank account number, or driver’s license number. Velasquez recommends “deliberate” sharing of personal data with research sites. Answering questions about TV commercials is probably fine, but providing medical information may not be worth the risk.
Create an email address for research sites only. Many survey sites sent us multiple emails per day. Registering these sites with an email address will prevent search suggestions from flooding your inbox.
Install anti-malware software. We recommend this step if one of your survey sites leads to a spammy third-party client.
