♪ Throw, Throw ♪ ♪ Throw, Throw, Throw ♪ This sound comes from black DJs in Newark’s club scene, and although online data shows that more women than men listen to Jersey Club’s music output, it has historically been male dominated.
But before we get into that story, let’s go back a bit and talk about where the Jersey club came from.
Sound Field traveled to Newark, New Jersey to meet the dancers and producers who make this music and find out what makes it so infectious.

The Jersey sound was born in the 1980s by musical icon Tony Humphreys at the legendary Zanzibar nightclub in Newark, New Jersey.
(exciting music) But it wasn’t until the early 2000s that it became the Jersey club sound you know today.
DJ Tameil, one of the pioneers of the club scene, would travel to Music Liberated, a hotspot for local DJs in Baltimore.
So I read all the credits, all the names, you know, the numbers, I looked up the number.

The first person I contacted was a man named Bernie, rest in peace Bernie.
There he met Baltimore DJs like DJ Technics and Rod Lee, who gave him their blessing to bring Baltimore style back to Newark.
It was this mix of styles that led to the country club music that quickly became popular in the state of New Jersey.

(exciting music) After Thameil, more and more Jersey DJs started creating their own club hits and getting millions of streams online.

Jersey club music is your morning coffee, your afternoon red bull, your midnight espresso, your straight-up, rowdy party music.

There were a lot of guys behind the DJ booth and all the girls were dancing and rocking.

In my opinion, they can’t go out and showcase their talents as they want.
(audience speaking) – There’s something so unique about our state and our club from Jersey that it’s like there’s no way it won’t happen on the big screen or in the mainstream or anywhere.
So the best part was that one woman took things even further with other women.
(beat music) This beat is a key component of the Jersey club sound and was inspired by the Baltimore club.

(happy music) I have a lot of respect for my teammate Technics, I respect him a lot, like people respect me.
He was in the DMZ DJ War in 1993, juggling records back and forth on turntables.
But we stuck with that record, took that rhythm pattern and kept going.
