Simple Ballet Moves For Beginners – Whether you are new to ballet or a seasoned veteran, it is always good to learn, familiarize yourself with and improve your basic ballet terms. Knowing these terms will help you understand what your teacher is asking during rehearsals without having to interrupt or wait to see what the other dancers are doing to follow. We’ve compiled a list of some solid beginner terms that every new dancer should know.

Adagio: Slow, continuous and smooth movements. It aims to improve the dancer’s balance, strength and lines. It is also an opening sequence of a pair dance in which one partner takes the other.

Arabesque: When the dancer stands on one leg and the other is raised behind the body and extended in a straight line.

Bar: A horizontal wooden bar attached to the walls of the room. The barre is there to support the dancers and barre exercises are part of every ballet class.

En pointe: Balance on your toes. Pointe is achieved in pointe shoes and only students with a higher skill level will do it.

Remember: don’t let the terms or positions intimidate you. Adult classes are usually very friendly and relaxed and your teacher will always make a point and sometimes switch to simpler descriptive language. If in doubt, ask. Teachers love to get questions and if you’re not sure, someone else in the class will be too, so you’re doing them a favor by talking!

You may only use two or three in your first classes and adult beginners are not expected to put their feet in positions that hurt or cause joint pain, so be aware of how your hips feel, your knees and ankles when trying.

Tip: When you watch a ballerina in one of these positions, it looks like she’s rotating her feet at ankle height. In fact, the outlet comes from the hips. Focus on rotating your hips to relieve pressure on your knees and ankle joints.

Stand with your heels together and your feet pointed towards the outer corners or edges of the room. Rotate your hips and legs as far as is comfortable.

Keeping your feet forward, cross one leg in front of the other – connect your heel to the front of the middle or arch of the other leg.

Start in third position and slide one foot forward, creating a space of about 5 to 10 inches between your feet. Be careful with this as it can twist or strain your knee and ankle. If you feel any discomfort, turn your legs forward more or don’t do the pose.

Similar to the third position, but the legs are more crossed, with the heel of one foot connecting to the other foot closer to the big toe joint or “bunion bone” as it is often referred to.

Tip: You might hear your ballet teacher say, “Be careful not to twist your feet.” This means that you do not allow your legs to roll forward when you are in any of the above positions. The best way to avoid this is to imagine that you have a Malteser under the inner arch of each foot. Don’t cross your knees, keep your ankle muscles lifted to push your outer foot into the floor and prevent your inner arches from rolling forward. Not sure what to say? Go and get a Maltese pack. Don’t blame us when you eat the rest of the bag. And don’t try this on a cream rug.

How To Do The 5 Basic Ballet Positions

Arms can be one of the most beautiful and expressive elements of ballet, so take advantage of using your arms to feel the music and move through positions.

Keep your body straight while practicing these positions, but during exercise or dance, you can use them while bending or moving your body.

This is the place of rest or preparation of the arms in the ballet. We often start and end with a bra. Stand, let your arms hang at your sides and then place them almost at hip height, allowing your elbows to bend slightly. The arms should be gently rotated and the shoulders relaxed.

From the base of the bra, raise your arms so that both hands are in front of your belly. Keep your arms extended with a gentle bend at the elbow – as if you were carrying a beach ball on your stomach.

From the first position, open your arms to bring your arms to your sides. Keep this gentle bend in your elbows and keep your palms forward, without sagging. Your arms should be directly in front of your shoulder line – as if you are about to hug someone.

Place your hands and arms above your head. Keep that gentle bend in your elbow. Do not let your fingers touch and keep your palms facing down or slightly inward. The trick with this one is to keep your shoulders down and relaxed as much as possible to elongate your neck and avoid hunching or stretching.

Although most people know what a plié looks like, most probably don’t know that there are five basic positions that are the first thing most students learn in class. Each pose includes separate placements for legs, arms and hands.

In the first place, the heels of the feet are brought together, with the toes pointed in all directions, creating a “V” shape. The legs should be turned as far as possible. The arm should be bent at the elbow and held in front of the body, with the arm almost touching the thighs, which creates the appearance of a bracket – () – around the torso. Your wrists should also be bent so that your hands are pointing inwards.

Your child should practice pointing their legs out more while practicing their stance.

Learn The Structure And Distinct Parts Of Ballet Class

Let your child start in the first position before moving to the second position. Second, they move apart so that they are shoulder width apart. Your toes should still be apart. The arms should be raised so that they are almost in a “T” shape. Make sure your child is not pulling their arms back; instead, they should be rounded slightly towards the front.

Again, for your child to practice in third place, have them start in second place. Then they will slide their right foot until their right heel touches the inside of their left foot. Your child will then move their hands back to the first position and then raise their right hand until their fingers are in line with their hips.

To reach the fourth position, your child will start in the third position and move his right leg slightly forward, creating a small space between his legs. Your child will move both hands to the fourth position. In the third place, the right hand is second and the left hand is first. For the fourth position, the right arm will be above the head, with the elbow slightly bent and the wrist bent inwards. The left hand will return to the first position. This one is tricky, so make sure your child practices this position a few times.
