Intermittent Fasting Weight Loss Success – Like many mothers, Janiel Wright lost weight after giving birth. She was overweight before pregnancy, and the extra baby weight means the 5-foot-8 woman now weighs 337 pounds. It was the hardest thing he had ever done.

“I want to be good for my daughter. I want to live for it,” said Wright, 28, of Toronto, Ontario. “I really want to change the future against what I see myself.”

Wright has tried and lost weight many times in the past and knew he had to do something different this time.

“I don’t want to fail like I’ve always failed a million times. This time I was very clever. I said, “Let me choose food that can last me the rest of my life. Let me start slow with my training,” he said.

Wright discovered intermittent fasting and found that the 16:8 diet, called the no-eating schedule, made sense. The diet allows Wright to eat whatever he wants in eight hours, then fast for the next 16 hours.

Following this plan, Wright cuts down on carbohydrates and adds vegetables, fruits, lean meats and egg whites to his diet. He also started drinking at least eight glasses of water a day. He hopes consistency will pay off.

In the past, Wright didn’t exercise because he was afraid to go to the gym. So he bought a treadmill and started slowly, walking for 15 minutes every day. Soon he was walking 30 minutes a day. After that, 45 minutes a day.

Wright also started doing 30-minute HIIT video workouts every day. His instincts are right – consistency leads to results. Since January, Wright has lost 71 pounds and weighs 266 pounds. Eventually, he wants to weigh 180 pounds, but he knows it will take time.

“It works if you keep going. I know the highs are still going to happen, but if I keep going, it’s going to work,” he said.

Although she likes that her clothes fit better, she notes that this is the change she needs the most.

Wright took to social media to share his journey, a habit he started because he thought it would get him walking. But it also has an unexpected benefit.

Wright hopes to inspire others who want to make healthy lifestyle changes and shares these tips on what keeps her focused:

Although Wright wants to lose weight to be a better mother, she is thankful for her strong faith.

“I can’t do anything if I have God in my life and I give my heart to him,” he said. “My faith and my daughter are the strength I need to get better.”

For months, the numbers on the scale don’t seem to change. But Wright noticed that his clothes were better and he was stronger. His stamina has improved and his muscles don’t hurt after training. That’s when he knows he’s done, not what he sees on the scale.

“I have this coat and it’s very tight,” she said. “I would use it every month for the first three months (to track my progress). Every time I put it on, it would fit a little bit on the slide.”

Remember that your overall health (and how your body feels) is more important than the rate of weight loss. Fast results are good, yes. But keep the long game in mind! Sustainability is important.

It’s also important to be patient with yourself, my journey had many ups and downs – until I thought about scale. It wasn’t until my son Hunter was born that I finally found balance and self-acceptance.

Adults can lose 0.55 to 1.65 pounds per week (or 0.25 to 0.75 kg) with intermittent fasting. It’s really fast! It’s not a bad diet either, and it’s healthy when done with proper nutrition, a healthy diet, and exercise.

Again, focus on developing healthy habits, not speed. There was a time when I restricted myself to 1100 calories a day. Yes, it is too little for my body to need. At the time when I was most concerned about food, I was losing half a pound a day.

After learning about macros and healthy weight loss, I rely on how I feel instead of thinking about calories. I’ve been building muscle, eating healthy and developing healthy habits.

When you fast for 16 hours, many things happen to your body. I split it into 2 levels.

Growing up, I was always considered a big kid. It makes sense – I’m 5’11”, but big means fat to me. I remember trying to eat my first meal in the third grade. That was just the beginning of years of eating and purging and trying all kinds of diets. I’ve Hollywood Juice Diet, Slim-Fast, Herbalife, Mayo Clinic Diet, WW (formerly known as Weight Watchers), Atkins… etc. Yes, yes, I heard about the diet, I tried it.

It made me weigh the yo-yo. When I was 20, at my wedding I was only eating half a sandwich a day and doing cardio. I lost the most weight ever, but that success didn’t last long. When I came back from my star, I gained 10 pounds and the weight came back. Over the years, I gained and lost the same 50 pounds over and over again.

At my heaviest non-pregnancy weight, I hit 300 pounds. I’ve been lucky enough to never have had any serious health issues related to my weight, but I have struggled with knee and back pain that I used as an excuse not to exercise.
