So I’m Michael Marshall and I’m the Project Manager for the Good Thinking Society, a charity in the UK. Oh, and the whole point of our philanthropy is to challenge science to psychology. So we strive to improve science education. And then the other part of it, what we do, a big part of my job, is find ideas that are not supported by evidence and find people who advocate those ideas, find people who buy into those ideas and research them. And see if anything can be done to prevent people from getting confused and hurting people through things. So I spent a lot of time watching people promoting other cancers and other drugs. I’ve spent a lot of time seeing people who claim to be able to talk to the dead. They say faith can heal.

And then another part of my time, oh, my time is spent talking to people who believe in and support unconventional ideas. And that’s how I got into the flat earth world, uh, through my, uh, slightly weird, uh, curiosity. Oh, before I worked full-time as a skeptic, my interests were in rooms full of people who disagreed with me. To understand what people’s thoughts are when I see them, well, that’s not true. Such a far-fetched and highly unusual belief. Um, what makes people believe in them and what paths lead people there? What evidence supports their mental state and how they interact with the world and try to convey that worldview.
Instead of talking to people who have a particular faith, and many people do, if they have doubts about something and they talk to a person of faith, I have an electronic program. Tell them, tell them they’re wrong, show them all the evidence, and tell them, sometimes instead of getting into a very heated argument, I try to put some space between us and have a civil and polite conversation. . So I say, I don’t believe your opinion, but I’m very interested to know why I don’t and why you do, let’s talk. So I had these civil debates, and I came across flat theory and the idea that there are people today who think the world is flat.

It’s so funny and funny that we’re sitting here because I know there’s flat dirt out there and I just thought it was weird and funny. About a week ago, I found a friend of mine who is very well educated and has a PhD in biochemistry, and oh, he has a sister who is also very intelligent and educated. My friend told me that her sister has straight lines and that her sister is very upset that we don’t take them seriously. He said something else, which is a rumor coming from us now. It’s, well, you know, if you look at the evidence, you know that what you’re being told isn’t true. So all of a sudden I’m obsessed with Plains People, and then on Twitter, no, no, I wasn’t a follower until I saw this tweet. I’m gone. Oh, yes, so I contacted you and found out that you live in Liverpool and I’m in Liverpool today. So, oh, we’re talking here. So tell me, what does Flat Earth think and why?
So you have to open up that question a little bit because it’s very easy for us to think of motion on a flat surface as uniform motion. I thought so for the first time in 2013 when I first met and met the Flat Earth Society in the UK. So I talked to the vice president of the Flat Earth Society. I assumed you probably have, and people who think the world is flat believe the world is a disc. In the middle is the Arctic Circle, and then there are the continents of the world. And one of them looks like the edge of the Antarctic disc. But the first time I talked to the flattering community, I realized that the flat world is not the version of the world that happens to everyone.
Some think it’s a disc, but others say, yes, it has the Arctic Circle in the center and a mass of land around it. Then there’s the ice on the edge of Antarctica, instead it’s a disk that, according to some, is forever moving in all directions. So they believe that the Earth is really an infinite plane on all sides. It’s a double-edged truth, and it’s a very nice idea.
MM: So it goes north, south, east, west, just going up and down forever, but it can’t go up and down because it’s never ending. Guidance is eternal. So there is no way to go underground. So, when I first got into the flat earth movement in 2013, there was a serious coffee debate going on.

It was really ordinary. So they had the Flat Earth Society at the time, which was mostly a forum where they presented their evidence for some version of the theory. I also think that there is a sect going on in this movement right now, which is the middle of the spectrum, which is people who really believe that the world is flat. On the other hand, they didn’t quite believe it, but enjoyed the intellectual quest to argue that they must be false. And so they get a lot of evidence inside and outside the walls that most people can’t imagine. So when I first met him in 2013, people were waiting for these arguments that he thought the world was round, but had never thought about before, except in an arrogant way, he knew better than anyone else. Think about it and come to a different conclusion.
And so they got into arguments about, well, what about pictures of Earth in space? What about ships crossing the horizon? That’s a nice gotcha, but don’t think that these were the first things they thought of, that they thought of the world, because the world was round. So it looks like people who think the world is flat, I think the same way and still think it’s flat earth, so at least there’s a good answer to that. Those who believe the world is round have never tested the idea because of these arguments. They rejected it. What was happening, I think, in a sense, was that Sect’s idea that the world isn’t flat, but just chasing it, was a fun and very well-known part of the fun.
They were winning arguments with the people who came in and surprisingly assumed they could answer them all. In winning these arguments, they made many changes.
