Let’s start with the basics. What exactly is food prep? It is common practice to prepare all meals in advance so that they can be packaged and ready to eat according to the chef’s specifications. It’s especially popular with professionals, parents and high school students, who do it to save time. It’s also a great way to whip up a healthy meal in one go, so you can curb your cravings during your lunch break.

Meal prepping is also an effective way to develop the habit of choosing more nutritious and healthful foods in the long run, because it eliminates the need to make quick, unplanned, convenient decisions when you’re hungry or tired. (This choice is generally not a healthy choice.)

Are they the same? Choose whole grains first. This ingredient is the base of your meal and is the same at all four meals. I love wild rice blends because I get many different types of rice in one convenient package.

I recommend using whole grains as they keep you fuller longer and are a must-have in a packed lunch if you have a long day at the office.

Next, choose two or three different types of protein to add variety and texture. For this post, I chose eggs, chicken, and shrimp because they all cook quickly, keeping cooking time to a minimum. I also made a few bowls of instant pot stew and homemade pinto beans. It all depends on personal preference and organizational issues.

If you must hurry, choose lean protein such as eggs, fish, seafood, chicken breast, turkey breast or tofu. If you have more time, try beef, chickpeas, broad beans, lentils or pork.

The next step in this saga is preparing vegetable food. This is another great opportunity to get creative. Put as many veggies on your plate as possible! The more the better. Use all the colors of the rainbow, especially lots of green. In this example, I chose seven vegetables in total – onions, zucchini, bell peppers, asparagus, cherry tomatoes, peas, carrots and broccoli.

A lot depends on where you have lunch and how you get there (if at all) to where you want to eat. I work from home and eat at home, so I like to only use glass containers with airtight, lockable lids. They are a very safe material, great for heating and can be used permanently.

Having an insulated lunch box that can hold an ice pack can be helpful, especially if the meal you’re preparing contains meat. Freeze ice packs ahead of time and pack the day’s pre-made meals into your lunch box so all you have to do in the morning is grab and go!

You may have noticed that most meal prep recipes only require 4 days. There is an important reason for this. Friday is not a cheat day. (As we need it!) Easy Meal Prep Ideas To Shake Up Your Routine

The color of vegetables will become lighter as they are cooked. Some raw vegetables, like spinach or lettuce, are harder to keep fresh. It all depends on how fresh it is when you buy it. I’ve been keeping my lettuce heads in the refrigerator fine for over a week. Others, on the other hand, start feeling sad in just two days.

Find out when your supermarket receives produce and go shopping on the same day to ensure you have the freshest ingredients to prepare meals. Or go to markets and small butcher shops to prepare the freshest food. Fresh ingredients are the key to preparing a successful meal!
