The Chicago Blackhawks are an American professional ice hockey team based in Chicago. The Blackhawks are part of the “Original Six”, a group of teams that made up the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1942 until expansion in 1967. They won six Stanley Cup titles.
The Best (and Worst) Nhl Teams Of The Past Decade
The team was founded in 1926 by Chicago businessman Frederick McLaughlin, who was awarded one of the first American expansion franchises by the NHL, who then purchased the defunct Portland Rosebuds of the Western Hockey League to form the core of his team. In 1929, the team moved to Chicago Stadium, the largest indoor sports arena in the world at the time, and served as the team’s home until 1994.
Originally known as the Black Hawks (the spelling was changed to “Blackhawks” in 1986 to match the original NHL paper), the team had some early success with Stanley Cup victories in the 1933–34 and 1937–38 seasons. The second championship was significant as the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup after going 14–25 in the regular season, the worst record of any title winning team (they were also in the playoffs as six of the eight NHL franchises that would qualify for the postseason at the time is).
The Black Hawks returned to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1943–44, but were defeated by the Montreal Canadiens in four games. They soon entered the worst stretch in team history, finishing near the bottom of the NHL in all but two seasons between 1946-47 and 1956-57.
The 1960s were a period of renaissance for Chicago, as teams featuring future Hall of Famers Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, Glenn Hall and Pierre Pilote advanced to three Stanley Cup Finals and won the franchise’s third title with a victory over the underdog Detroit Red Wings. Close the 1960-61 season. In the 1969–70 season, the Blackhawks acquired goaltender Tony Esposito, who set a franchise record with 418 wins and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

The 1969–70 season also marked the start of the franchise’s 28-straight playoff streak, the second-longest postseason streak in NHL history. In those 28 years, however, the team advanced to just three Stanley Cup Finals, losing each time.
Despite the team’s failure to win the Stanley Cup, the series featured many highlights. In particular, Mikita, Hull, Esposito and Keith Magnuson anchored a Black Hawk team that lost a dramatic seven-game Stanley Cup Final to a dominant Canadian team in 1970-71. The Blackhawks returned to the finals two years later, but were again defeated by Montreal. The team topped their division seven times in the 1970s.
The franchise tradition began during the 1985 playoffs, when Chicago fans—after seeing their team defeated by the Edmonton Oilers in the first two games of the conference finals—booed and drowned out the singer during the US national anthem; Since then, every home game at Chicago Stadium and later at the United Center has featured a standing ovation from the home crowd during the national anthem.
Chicago added popular players Jeremy Roenick and Ed Belfour in 1988, who led the Blackhawks to the Presidents Trophy (as the team with the best regular season record) and the (now named) Stanley Cup Finals in 1990–91. 1991-92, where they lost in four games to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Blackhawks continued their decades-long playoff streak in 1996–97, when the team finished fifth (out of six) in their division and lost in the first round of the playoffs. Since 1997–98, the Blackhawks have gone 10 seasons without making the playoffs, with one exception: 2001–02, when the team lost in the conference quarterfinals to St. Louis Blues.
