Stay At Home Mom Struggling With Depression – I vividly remember the day my husband offered to stay home with the baby full time. The idea seemed like a complete dream.
When I was eight months pregnant with my first child, I was happy to take six weeks of maternity leave with my newborn daughter before going back to work. So when my husband was offered a new job where he could stay at home full time, I jumped at the chance.

Few parents have the opportunity to spend 24 hours a day at home.

I had no doubt that it was the best choice – I never thought twice. I knew I always wanted to stay home with my baby, but I never thought I would be faced with this decision later.

You might wonder how you can be alone when you spend every second of the day with your kids.
There is a difference. Let me tell you that no one deserves to spend every moment of the day with only children and babies.
Throughout the day, I made a mental list of all my adult thoughts, but I couldn’t share them. I was so excited when my husband came home – not just because I missed him (which I did), but because I couldn’t wait to have someone to talk to – especially someone old enough to talk to.

And when my husband comes home exhausted from talking to clients, I have to fight for the grown-up ideas that have been running through my head all day.
Staying At Home With Your Kids When You Can Barely Afford It
Games everywhere. Laughing, screaming and crying. Little people who want to be hugged and always interact.
Before I had kids, I really didn’t understand what overstimulation was. The worst part is that when you are alone at home with your children during the day, there is no one to come to you when you need to chat.
It took me a while to realize that most of my amazing parenting moments happened when I was depressed and inspired. It’s hard to be the calm, understanding father I always try to be at times like this.
Until I became a stay-at-home mom, I was never in a situation where I couldn’t walk away when I needed a second to breathe, think, or be quiet.
Stay At Home Moms Are Working Too
Don’t try to get me out of the house as a housewife. In most cases, it’s easier not to.
First of all, the smaller the child, the bigger the bag full of garbage every time he leaves the house. Carrying a diaper bag to go somewhere is a 15-minute job.
Not to mention how difficult it is to balance walking and sleeping. What if you skip or don’t get enough sleep? Then it is not worth getting angry.

Children are then loaded and unloaded at each stop. Lots of seat belt buckles and the ability to open and close the doors (without denting the car next to us!).
I Hate Being A Stay At Home Mom’: Why It’s Normal
But one thing I don’t hear about is mental effort to keep your kids safe in public.
We are talking about holding hands, looking for a car, and walking fast. Or trying to laser-focus your kid in the park while millions of kids are running around (because we all know what happens when you look away for even a second).
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve decided to keep my kids at home to avoid the mental stress of it all. But being at home 95% of the day can get lonely and depressing.
It surprised me, and I didn’t really struggle until I became a stay-at-home mom for a year or two.
How To Cope With Stay At Home Mom Depression
As a mother, I was constantly doing things like toilet training my son or teaching him to cook a new dish. The feelings I get after doing these things are always rewarding because I know it’s for my kids and it means a lot to me.
But in the end, I started burning out because I had no success trying. Or if they were, they were rare.
There is no time left to meet work performance goals, learn a new hobby, or have mental energy for self-care or personal satisfaction.
I feel like I put 100% of my energy into my kids every day, and when that happens, it’s hard to deal with the loss of your goals and accomplishments as a human being.
Stay At Home Mom Syndrome
One day I no longer understood what kind of person I was – I realized that I was just a “mom”. Don’t get me wrong, being a mom is great. It’s one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done in my life, but it’s not everything.
I’ve spent years trying to find myself again, and if you ask me who I am now, I won’t just say mom.
I’m also a writer, avid reader, coffee, travel, comedy, reality shows, and romantic movies. I am artistic, silly and spontaneous.
And they are all part of who I am. They need time and attention.

As hard as being a stay-at-home mom is, if I had the choice to go back and do it differently, I wouldn’t.
They say you can’t pour from an empty cup, but honestly, being a mom is all about pouring from the cup until it’s empty, then pouring more.
