How To Start Selling Handmade Items – Have you ever tried to sell something you made? Whether you’re trying to sell at a craft fair, in a store, or online, selling handmade products can be a big step for anyone. When I first started selling my handmade products, I was nervous about the process. Where do you start and how do you start? In this article, I will explain some of the steps I take to sell your handmade products and also share some tips and tricks.
Some of the best selling items I make are simple and practical. Zippered pencil cases, travel shaving and makeup bags, and the ever-popular Christine ID Wallet are some of the top-selling items. I started making these items as gifts and found a huge following with them. Although I still make and sell complex items, the most popular are these three items:

This zipper bag is one of the quickest and easiest things to make. Although I didn’t use the pattern for this post, it’s really easy to make and you can find all kinds of free tutorials on Pinterest. I like to make them in all kinds of fabrics, but the best-selling items are made with designer fabrics and team- and character-specific fabrics. This item is most popular for the back to school season.

Although these bags take a little time to make, they are incredibly popular with both men and women. I learned how to make them while attending a quilting retreat. Since then, I have been making them for sale for several years and figured out how to make them quickly and efficiently. These bags are a great seller for Mother’s and Father’s Day. They also make great birthday and Christmas gifts. Many customers also ask for them for high school and college students. I fell in love with this pattern the moment I found it. I’m looking for something similar to the Vera Bradley ID case. Kristine’s ID Wallet is very popular for school, birthdays, and Christmas. In particular, I found that girls and young women like to stay in school and work. I work part time in high school and most of the girls wear this type of ID purse around their neck. This is a good place to keep your ID and some other things. I received many requests from university students and also from young entrepreneurs. I have been able to make different ID wallets and they sell quite easily. The best way to sell these items is when I let the customers choose their own fabric. They feel very involved in the process and love to customize things themselves. While I made mine with a modification (eliminating the card slot and flap), I can easily say that this is one of the most popular items. Click here if you want to sew one yourself! I even have a video tutorial for you!
Once you know what you want to sell, you need to decide how you want to present your product. There are many options for getting your product to market. I have tried many different ways to sell my handmade products and have found the following 3 ways that work best for me. Let me share this with you!
Craft fairs and markets are a great way to showcase your handmade items. Do your best to book in advance to ensure you have enough time to stock your booth with products. Do a little homework before the event to see what kind of historical people attend. You will want to make sure that you have a product that will sell to the people who are in attendance. For example; If I go to Comic-Con, I’ll make something out of fabric that has a popular character on it. If I were to host a fall bazaar, I would definitely stock up on a lot of fall, Halloween, and Christmas items. I also recommend visiting some of the more popular places and seeing what they sell. Another fun option is to bring samples of your favorite fabric and allow customers to choose their own fabric. This helps them feel involved in creating their unique item! Make sure you charge the correct amount (plus shipping) before agreeing to produce the item. Have an order form and delivery time available.
How To Sell Handmade Items And Make A Profit
Selling online has quickly become one of the most popular ways to showcase your handmade products. Whether you use an existing platform, your website or social media, selling online has many benefits. Let me give you some tips for each!
If you have a local boutique or small business in your town, I would recommend them with the idea of selling your items in their stores. You will want to browse their selection now to see if they sell local, handmade products. This is a good sign that they may be open to new suppliers. I have the product in several stores and they both do slightly different things.
Trying to figure out how much to charge for your handmade products is always a topic of discussion. When I first started selling my handmade products, the price of my items was too low. I guess I don’t have confidence that my stuff is worth more or maybe I think that since I won’t pay more for something, no one will! What you have to remember is that a lot of people don’t know how to sew and they love what you do! I have broken down some thoughts on this topic.

I take the above into consideration when pricing my products in all the marketplaces I sell. In the past 6 months, I have made a lot of changes. Last year I opened my store on Amazon. Wow! It’s an adjustment. I have been doing this since November 2017. In the last few months I started selling PRIME. Wow, another adjustment! Visit my online store to see what I’m paying for. Being the cheapest definitely doesn’t make you more successful. If you find that an item is selling quickly, try increasing the price. Even if it’s only $1.00.

What is a niche and how did you find yours as an artist? As a business owner, a niche is a product category that you sell. Also, it depends on your target audience.
For example, consider an artist who sells oil paintings. He painted landscapes, portraits and abstracts. When you narrow it down to just one category: portraits, what happens? Is the number of clients you are getting decreasing? Come back! Because you specialize in a specific category, your audience will see you as an expert. His market niche is oil portraits. If you refocus on painting just wedding portraits, your business will have a better chance of scaling!

Remember: you do not limit yourself to focus on a single niche; You are looking to specialize in something and become an expert.
