The sequel, it was one of the few direct-to-video sequels my family grew up with, and I remember my sister and I proudly saying we had “the only good Disney sequel.” Don’t know about that, there aren’t many of them to begin with, and they’re all pretty bad in terms of quality.
In particular, it’s probably the worst of the four films we have (I’ve seen the others, admittedly), especially considering the quality of the films it contains.
Remember, now, the first film was the first animated film to be nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award, and that would remain until the release of the Pixar film.

Angelique mirrors the Beast in a big way – his refusal to celebrate upsets the Christmas Angel at the prospect of being able to use his abilities again for the holidays, locking him in the castle attic. Tim Curry does a great job of voicing Forte as expected and it has to be said that his character is also well crafted. One would think that it would give the original theatrical release a bit more polish. However, his motivations as presented are decidedly shallow and petty. Forte, a former court musician, is primarily jealous that the prince has never really appreciated him or his dark deeds, and he doesn’t want Belle to steal the young man’s thunder because he can’t stand it for a while. Yeah, there seems to be some kind of subtext going on there that you don’t want to consider.
Often, considering that the castle is quite old and the prince quite young, all these characters seem to have a long history in the castle. It’s hard to ignore, though, and Curry doesn’t shy away from his role. The result is a villain as dark yet funny as only Curry could play, and I think that’s what the film has. I can’t say much about the other characters, including Angelique, because almost all of them are window dressing in the new story. I’m not sure Paul Robbins’ Little Fife is as effective as Bad Chicken, so no harm, no offense.
At least there’s a song, right? Well… yes, but you won’t find anything close to the quality of the real thing here. Broadway pomp gives way to nursery rhyme-level tunes that list all the wonderful things you can enjoy this time of year or compliment your general belief in Christmas. Do what the creature says, regardless of what it means. It could be said (maybe it’s best not to have Hanukkah involved?) I admit there are some other positives. The animation, while not as good as the original, is at least pretty good, coming from a very small TV-based studio within Disney. The story takes such a dark turn that I don’t think I actually thought it was almost subjectively true – you know, before it took the easy way out and made things nice and easy. Had to go back.
