We have seen a noticeable increase in diamond inquiries in the last month. Some are just general curiosity, but most have a genuine interest in buying man-made diamonds. Until recently, there was little information available to give customers complete confidence in their purchasing choices. The important thing to remember is that it is a choice. Just like Uber hasn’t completely replaced taxis, I honestly don’t believe one will replace the other. By making an informed decision, you can feel comfortable with which option you choose.
Before looking at the properties of lab created diamonds, it is important to understand that there are two main ways to create artificial diamonds. High pressure/high temperature (HPHT) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The HPHT process mimics the high pressures that create diamonds in the Earth’s crust. A metal catalyst (graphite/carbon) is used to dissolve the carbon in the diamond seed, essentially extracting the carbon from the ferrous metal. In contrast, the CVD process uses lower pressure but a vacuum powered by hydrogen and methane. This means that the carbon source comes from steam. The CVD method begins with developing diamonds using diamond seed crystals. This is much the same way that your decisions developed as a child doing science experiments in school.

Natural diamonds occur in nature as type 1 (a/b) or type 2 (a/b) crystals. The purest and most transparent form of carbon crystal in the world is the type 2a crystal, which has practically no impurities that make it colorless and only accounts for 1.8% of the world’s supply, making it a gem of rare quality.

All diamonds created at Altr start with type 2a seed crystals and are guaranteed quality as they are only CVD diamonds. Type 2a diamonds have much less nitrogen, so they appear whiter and clearer. This is consistent with the “Shine Brighter” campaign.
This is the most technical information. The easiest way is that diamonds are made by Altr.
When we show our customers the diamonds Altr created, the first thing we try to tell them is that one was created underground and the other was created above ground. That’s basically the only difference. If you have two brothers, one of whom underwent IVF and the other was operated on in the traditional way, you wouldn’t look at them and call them synthetic humans. They are identical to you as a human in every way, just with a different beginning.

Man-made diamonds are very different stones from cubic zirconia or moissanite stones, both of which are softer and have different optical properties. Both diamonds and moissanites are known as stimulants, meaning they are similar but not identical to diamonds.

The first thing to look for when buying a lab-created diamond is whether it reveals exactly how it was created. Cheaper versions are made from direct HPHHT or a combination of HPHT and CVD. If the stone you buy cannot guarantee its creation method, it is probably a cheaper combination creation stone.
The second thing to look for is where the diamond was certified. If it is certified by the International Gemological Institute (IGI), it will be a cheaper stone because the IGI’s grading parameters are not as strict as the Gemological Certification and Certification Institute (GCAL). IGI labs are known to have lower color and/or clarity ratings than GIA labs. In addition, the IGI certificate does not tell you whether your diamond was created by HPHT or CVD.
As mentioned earlier, GCAL is one of the most rigorous grading laboratories in the world and fully supports grading. In addition to the general 4C information, the GCAL certificate has many additional functions.

Ultimately, the choice depends on whether it is more important to you that the diamond was created underground, or whether you would rather have a larger diamond for the same budget.
