Instead, a buyer from a nonprofit organization was unhappy to learn that all ten American Silver Eagle coins he received were counterfeit, according to the nonprofit Anti-Counterfeit Education Foundation (www.ACEFonline.org).

“ACEF has notified Walmart and the Secret Service about the advertiser and it is under investigation; however, criminals who sell counterfeit rare coins and counterfeit gold and silver bars online often change company names and websites,” warned Doug Davis, ACEF Anti.-Forging. Director: “We have seen suspicious advertisements posted on many platforms, including Amazon and Facebook. We are currently monitoring over 300 websites selling counterfeits, many of which appear to be run by the same people or companies, but often under different names. Some even copy. Exact wording and actual photos from legitimate dealer websites,” explained Davis, a former Texas police chief.
An authentic American Silver Eagle bullion minted at the United States Mint contains one ounce of silver and can be sold for 20 percent of the current price of silver. A Long Island investor mistakenly thought he was getting a good deal when he paid just $26.16, including taxes, for what ten sellers called “silver coins.”
The advertisement promised that the coins would come with a “U.S. Mint Certificate of Authenticity.”
The buyer thought he would get $300 or more for the ten items, but discovered they were fakes when he tried to sell them to a local coin dealer on Long Island.
The Great Paper Caper
As a show of good faith, the dealer bought all ten counterfeit coins for the same amount the investor originally paid, and then donated all the counterfeits to Davis for the Anti-Counterfeit Education Foundation, along with copies of the investor’s purchase documents.

As part of an ongoing investigation into suspected fraud, Anti-Counterfeiting Task Force investigators are examining trading websites suspected of selling counterfeit coins and precious metals.

“On a recent purchase, we ordered three advertised American Eagle silver coins from a seller on Walmart.com for $7.99 each. As is typical with many shady sellers on social media and other sites, the advertiser wanted to appear legitimate by requesting payment via PayPal. “The coins received were professionally authenticated, did not meet the US Mint weight standard and were magnetic. Genuine pieces are not magnetic,” Davis explained.

Experts from the Anti-Counterfeit Education Foundation warn that many counterfeits are of very good quality and can easily fool buyers who have no experience handling coins and bullion.
“Counters and their associates promote counterfeits on social media and websites that may promise genuine goods but deliver counterfeits. Every day, ACTF investigators find suspicious websites selling counterfeit coins and precious metals that prey on unsuspecting victims ” said Davis. “Remember, if you are not familiar with precious metals or rare coins, it is best to contact a reputable dealer, such as the experts associated with the Accredited Precious Metals Dealers Program (www.APMDdealers.org) or the Professional Numismatists Guild (www.PNGdealers. org. PNG and APMD members must adhere to a strict code of ethics when buying and selling numismatic products,” advised Davis. “The important work of the Anti-Counterfeit Education Foundation and its volunteer group of rare coin and precious metals experts is fully supported.” ACEF is a 501(c)(3) corporation and all donations are tax deductible.”
