Villeneuve’s La Belle et La Bête was a great work of storytelling. It was over a hundred pages long and involved a “stupid” beast that had undergone more than just a change in appearance.
The stories of both Belle and the Beast are all in this original story. The Beast was a prince who lost his father and whose mother had to fight to protect his kingdom. The queen leaves him in the care of an evil fairy who tries to seduce him when he comes of age; When she refused, he turned her into an animal.

This myth, recorded by Apuleius in the 2nd century, is one of the oldest and many believe it to be the first.
The old Roman story begins when Psyche (jealous Venus) is released to a mountaintop to marry a murderous beast. Cupid is sent to destroy her, but instead falls in love and takes her to his castle. She is then told not to want to see the face of her husband who visits her in the dark of night and makes love. Finally, Psyche gives in to her curiosity, but accidentally hits the man with a candle. In an attempt to redeem herself, Psyche offers herself as a slave to Venus and undertakes a series of impossible tasks. After completing the last task (requesting beauty from the queen of the underworld), Psyche opens the “beauty box” and immediately falls into a coma. A badly beaten Cupid rescues her. He asks Brihaspati to die for him so that they can be alone forever.
Myths and stories travel far from generation to generation and we see parallels in these stories from all over the world.
The collection is known to have been in oral form before being published in printed form around 500 AD. This helps explain the later Beauty and the Beast stories, where the French Beast is replaced by a snake in the Russian story.
