Classical Music For Studying Playlist – Are you preparing for final exams or completing a semester project? (This will open Spotify’s “Ultimate Study Music Playlist” on any device.) Surveys show that many students attest to the power of music to improve academic performance. “Music helps me calm down before big exams, helps me focus when studying, and removes distractions,” says Kali G., an online student at the University of Wyoming.

Research shows that music can stimulate our thinking and help us focus on certain learning tasks. A 2020 study found that nursing students who practiced progressive muscle relaxation (a mindfulness technique) while listening to relaxing music before a test performed better on a test and had lower stress levels than students who did nothing before the test. In another study, students who attended lectures over classical music scored higher on a tracking test than students who listened to lectures without music. Research by Neuron shows that pauses between musical movements help our brains focus and organize new information.

But all is not well. In a small 2017 study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology, researchers found that students who read about time zone concepts while listening to music scored lower on a test than students who read in silence.

These 6 Types Of Music Are Known To Dramatically Improve Productivity

Does music help or hinder learning? “It often depends on the individual and what’s best for them,” says Steven Williams, music therapy program coordinator at Capilano University in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. “For most people, relaxing background music helps create a conducive atmosphere for studying. People who find background music distracting can use it as a study reward or relaxation time.”

Even if you’re good with background music while studying, beware of lyrics, drama, overly lively beats, or too loud a volume. Research shows that fast, loud music reduces reading comprehension.

If you are doing something creative, listen to the music of the surrounding noise. A small study from 2022 asked undergraduates to list different uses for everyday items they could think of in less than a minute (first a water bottle, then a clothes hanger). Participants silently came up with the idea for the water bottle and listened to the noise around the cafe as they came up with the idea for hanging clothes. With ambient noise in the background, participants made more suggestions and were more creative when “outside the box” ideas were needed. You can find some ambient noise options through YouTube or apps like Coffitivity.

There is no one-size-fits-all music solution. The above recommendations are based on past research and studies. It may not suit your learning style, and that’s okay! Experiment with different playlists, genres and songs to find what works best for you.
