Niagara Falls is estimated to be about 12,000 years old – which, if you can believe it, is actually very “young” in terms of major geological features.

The falls were originally formed by the melting of the glaciers that created the Great Lakes in the area. Water flowing from Lake Erie into Lake Ontario cuts the Niagara River and forms Niagara Falls.

I mentioned earlier that Niagara Falls doesn’t have just one waterfall, but actually three: Veil Falls, American Falls, and the largest (located on the Canadian side), Horseshoe Falls. When you see Niagara Falls – especially the Horseshoe Falls – you’re sure to be amazed at the power of the water flow. The amount of water flowing over these falls (about 600,000 gallons/2.5 million liters) is enough to completely fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool in just one second!

The amount of water flowing through the falls decreases at night, although it is only half of what it is during the day. A portion of the water is delivered to generating stations in both the United States and Canada between 9:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. each day. But it will be back in full force during the most important hours of the day!

Niagara Falls is located on the Canada-US border and can be visited from New York or Ontario. Without a doubt, the most impressive views are from the Ontario side, perfect for any tour from Toronto!

How To Get To Niagara Falls From Toronto: Bus, Train, Uber, Tour

The waterfalls are connected to the Rainbow Bridge. You can walk across this bridge for stunning views of the falls (or watch the fireworks!). Just note that if you want to cross the bridge to the other side of the falls, you will need to enter a different country, so you need a passport!

The best time to visit Niagara Falls, although certainly the busiest, is during the summer months from June to August. During this time, you will have warmer temperatures, which is especially pleasant. Great if your trip includes a water cruise as the mist from the falls is pretty cool!

Although visiting the falls is technically free, we found it worth a tour! This is especially true if you’re looking to make a day trip from Toronto. You’ll need transportation to get here, and if you don’t want to deal with Toronto traffic or find parking, a tour that includes your ride here and back is a big plus.

We liked that the bus made a few stops along the way so we could take pictures and take a little walk. First we stopped at Niagara College’s teaching winery for a wine tasting. And let me tell you, they may be a school, but the wine is delicious! Oh, and there’s nothing like a little wine at 11am!

After a short drive, we arrived at Niagara Falls, where we had free time to walk around and see the falls from every angle. It’s really fascinating! Be sure to walk along the boardwalk to see the falls from every angle.

It certainly wasn’t a great dining experience, but the food was still delicious.

Next is our trip! The boat trip to the falls was definitely the highlight. Although it’s a quick trip, it’s all you need to see the power of Niagara Falls and get wet, of course! If you’re here and the cruise isn’t going, you’ll experience the Journey Behind the Falls. This allows you to see the mighty water flowing from the viewing platform right behind the waterfall!

Finally we had time to shop and explore the beautiful town of Niagara on the Lake, with its charming shops, historic buildings and beautiful flower displays. We stopped for beer and appetizers at the Shore Cafe and Wine Bar which we highly recommend!

While Niagara Falls was definitely the star of the day, this trip had a lot of special extras that we really enjoyed. Each ticket is $200 CAD and when you factor in all the experiences, we really couldn’t have made it cheaper on our own and the planning of it all was amazing!
