Happy Birthday (belated) Happy Birthday! You are 19 years old and have the whole world ahead of you. Maybe you took a course in high school (Planning 10 at BC or something) that taught us or at least was supposed to teach us about economics… but they missed a big part: How?

So I thought sharing this information and organizing it in an easy to follow way might help you because if I were 19 I would want other people to write articles like this.

Think about your future: do you plan to have a car, a house in 10 years? Travel around the world? Kids? Well, you might be tempted to think “oh yeah, I’ll just pay the money”. That would be great, but you’ll probably need a loan to finance the purchase etc.

Your financial future will affect your life in more ways than you think, and spending a few minutes learning how things work can help you make smart decisions and achieve your financial dreams. Being disciplined with your money, building a solid credit history and learning how finances work is a good start. On the contrary, not understanding how credit works, using credit cards and having too much debt can ruin your future.

Being a student myself and seeing people around me manage their finances, I feel that many people could benefit from some of the advice and experiences I’ve had. I get a lot of requests from friends about how bank offers and credit cards work, and instead of explaining them one by one, I can refer them to this article.

To be honest, there are referral links with banks and especially credit cards (American Express, BC Credit Union, Questrade, Tangerine, EQ Bank, etc.). I only have referrals for the financial institutions and personal credit cards I use. Although some of them are both, you have the option not to use them and that’s fine. The award will support me in continuing this blog and allow me to share my experiences and lessons learned so that you can learn from my journey.

I have already opened accounts with several banks and received rewards from them, so I went through the process. You can also scroll to the end of the article to find out where I’m coming from.

If you qualify for student loans, applying for them helps finance your education through forgiveness, grants, interest-free, and sometimes interest-free loans after graduation*.

The amount of government student loans depends on your financial needs. In addition, if you really need to pay tuition or have financial problems in your current situation, your school counselors often have options to help you in such situations.

Sometimes banks offer rewards for opening an account with them. It’s best to be at least 19 years old (or the legal age of majority in your state/province) when you complete your application, as some financial institutions do not allow existing account holders to receive rewards. Before you get started 💰💰💰, here are a few things to consider:

Here are some common things financial institutions may ask you to do to meet the application requirements:

If you’ve filed your taxes, you can get a tax return from the Canada Revenue Agency, you can choose direct deposit, and that can count as a bank deposit (more on that later). The only downside is that direct deposit happens every 4 months and may not be eligible for withdrawals as some banks require monthly deposits. If in doubt, check with your financial institution.
