, there is an anecdote about a wild man, Enkidu, who loves a virtuous priestess, Shamhat. Like Snow White, however, the origins of the story of Beauty and the Beast as we know it today can be found in Ovid’s book.
Psyche was the fairest and most beautiful of the three sisters, but all who came to admire her did so only for her appearance, not for a woman’s aspiration. The attention Psyche received earned her the wrath of Venus, the goddess of love. He ordered his son Cupid to turn Psyche into a hideous beast for revenge. But when he saw Psyche himself, he fell in love with her. Cupid promised to protect her from her mother’s wrath. When Psyche’s father went to visit an oracle, he was told that she would marry a terrible monster and that he would have to leave her alone on top of a mountain to claim her. Psyche accepted her fate and did not wait for the west wind to take her to an enchanted palace in the clouds instead. His lover came to him invisibly every night to forget all his pleasures, and only prayed that he never tried to see her face. Psyche was happy for a while, but she began to miss her family. Despite Cupid’s fears, he allowed his sisters to visit him. However, the sisters were very jealous of Psyche, which put doubts in her heart about her mysterious husband. He convinced them to watch him while he slept to find out who he really was. Psyche was happy to learn that she was the wife of a god, but some hot oil spilled from her lamp on Cupid. Burnt in more ways than one, Cupid abandoned Psyche and had to perform some Herculean labors to prove his fidelity and win her back.
You can see how the story would develop into a parable about love, loyalty and how beauty is only skin deep. The story even took a step into reality with Petrus Gonsalvus, “the man in the woods” or “the hairy man”. Gonsalvus suffered from hypertrichosis, a condition in which hair grew all over his face. Because of his animal face, people at the time did not consider him human. In 1547 he was brought to the court of King Henry II of France where he more or less filled the post of “royal freak show”. He married a beautiful woman, Margaret of Parma, and they had children who also inherited their father’s hypertrichosis. Some scholars claim that it was Gonsalvus who inspired author Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve to write Beauty and the Beast. His version of the story was published in 1740, then abridged and republished by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont sixteen years later, and many more iterations by authors such as Andrew Lang followed.
It is generally agreed that Villeneuve wrote his story as a way to prepare young ladies for arranged marriages. It’s easy to see the metaphor when read through this lens: Her father is more or less dealing with a beauty suitor, sending her away from her family to live for him, and the emphasis is on her goodness. wealth and higher standards of living as reasons for neglecting its less pleasant qualities. Although the story can rise above it and its inherent implicit Stockholm Syndrome if told properly, only one version has successfully done so:

In a castle in the French countryside lives a poor merchant and his three beautiful daughters. The older, spoiled Marguerite and Georgette, cling to all semblance of their formerly privileged lives, while the younger, Beauty, dutifully helps keep the house.
This is where I come to the first problem I have with almost every iteration of Beauty and the Beast. In the story, Beauty was a nickname her family gave her because she was beautiful both inside and out. He has a real name, we never learn what it is. But each adaptation chooses lazily called its beauty. And yes, I know Belle just means “beauty” in French, but at least it’s a real name. I wouldn’t have a problem if they named her Belle (hello, Disney). This nickname “Beauty” not only sticks out like a sore thumb among the characters with common nomenclature, but really allows Beauty to be held to impossible standards and hated by her family. I quote Phelan Porteous, “I can’t imagine why there would be a complex between [the two sisters] when [her father] called the third.”
Even though Beauty works hard all day and doesn’t wear clothes to match her name, she still attracts at least one more suitor than her sisters combined, much to their envy.
