Fundamentals Of Acoustics 4th Edition – The beloved classic textbook, Introduction to Sound: Acoustics for the Hearing and Speech Science, returns for a fourth edition and continues its mission to teach the fundamentals of acoustics to students in the sciences. communication and related issues and penalties. Students of speech, language and hearing science need to know the basics of acoustics before they can properly begin the study of normal and problematic human communication.
The textbook is designed to provide an understanding of acoustic concepts for all students, not just those with a math and physics background. The book is suitable for undergraduate courses in acoustics for speech and hearing science, as well as courses in audiology.
Fundamentals Of Acoustics 4th Edition

“This is an exceptional book. It is the most important resource on the nature of sound and its measurement. The writing is clear and concise. Complex concepts in acoustics are explained in a simple way. The important subject of room acoustics. Recommended wholeheartedly to those involved in speech and hearing science.”
A Case Study Of Acoustic Intervention In Classrooms
“The Fourth Edition of Charles Debor’s Introduction to Sound continues to be the best primer for speech and hearing students beginning their study of acoustics. inside and outside the classroom . The book covers a lot of information about basic acoustics, but does not require students to have a lot of mathematical knowledge. It is written and spoken in a way that students can easily follow and understand. The room chapter acoustics is a good addition. The practice problems at the end of each chapter are comprehensive and closely follow the content of each chapter. Think about what they have learned.”
“As Speaks says, a good grounding in basic acoustic concepts is essential to understanding audiological practice and this book would make an excellent basic educational text. But Speaks clearly uses his teaching knowledge of the subject to write very clearly. His explanation of key ideas should be understandable to everyone, and his use of underlining and “often misunderstood” help to understand key principles … .. , the text becomes mathematical, but Speaks explains logarithms and decibels in a way that can be seen with a good story for two reasons The same volume increases the sound pressure level by 3dB, something which is often misunderstood.Chapter 10, ‘Room Acoustics’, is a good addition as it is one of the more flexible areas of acoustics that can be easily used in the laboratory, for example in understanding the effect of acoustics on speech recognition. …I think he’s one of the most accessible writers. texts on the subject and I recommend it as a basic text for academics and those seeking to build knowledge.”
Charles E. Debor, PhD, is Morse-Alumni Professor Emeritus in the Department of Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences at the University of Minnesota. He received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees from Ohio University and his PhD from the University of Michigan. He taught undergraduate/graduate courses in acoustics at the University of Minnesota for 39 years and developed undergraduate courses in the physics and biology of speech. Dr. Speaks was awarded a Distinguished Professor Award by the College of Liberal Arts in 1977 and the Horace T. Morse-Minnesota Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Education in 1997, and was inducted into the University of Minnesota Academy of Distinguished Teachers. In 1999, Dr. Speaks received the American Language Association’s 2002 Award of Excellence.
