By all accounts, I am a very lucky man. At 75 I am in better health and in better physical shape than at any time in my life, and frankly, most men are my age and younger. I live a vibrant, exciting life that includes traveling and spending lots of time with my family, as well as constantly challenging myself professionally and personally. While other people my age have retired, I can’t stop thinking about the future: what’s next for me and how I can continue to make a difference. It’s no secret that everyone and everything will age. My important message to men is that we should not grow old with age.

I also know that the last 16 years have been a gift, because if you knew me then, you’d think I wouldn’t be here to write this book by now. And that’s why my story is so important for everyone to hear, because I was you. I know how to change your age because I did it and I’m still doing it today.

In early 1998, I was 59 years old and clearly ready to give up. I hit an all-time low in my self-esteem, mood, well-being and appearance. I have spent my entire career in private practice as a family physician in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Although my business flourished, I really lost my passion for my work. Worse, I looked and felt like an old man. My joints and muscles hurt, I was short of breath every time I climbed a flight of stairs, my clothes were tight and my belly was huge. My LDL (bad cholesterol) scores were too high, my HDL (good cholesterol) scores were too low, I was on my way to full-blown type 2 diabetes, and I just found out I had heart disease. On top of all this, my interest in sex was almost non-existent. I suffered from erectile dysfunction and battled daily with anxiety and depression.

The irony, of course, was that I was a board-certified family medicine doctor who should have known about staying in shape and eating right. But the thing was: I didn’t know. Like most people in my profession, I had no nutrition or exercise training and knew nothing about the importance of hormone therapies and their relationship to healthy aging. As a result, I became another middle-aged doctor who was trained to separate the mirror image of the fact that my overall health had declined drastically.

Then one day, I found a copy of Muscle Media magazine lying in my exam room. I took it home that night and read it cover to cover. I couldn’t believe how physically fit these men and women were and for the first time in my life, I was jealous enough to do something about how I looked. I signed up for a lifetime subscription that night. Shortly thereafter, I began working with my first personal trainer, Ernie Ball. When I walked into his gym, I met a 50-year-old ex-Marine SEAL who looked at me and said, “I don’t know, old man. You look so stupid.” It was exactly what I needed to hear: His challenge would become my challenge.

A month into his balls-to-the-wall program, I read about the first winners of the 1997 Body-For-Life contest, looked at the participants’ before-and-after photos, and thought to myself: These are not people. can Actually I was amazed how so many people can change themselves in such a short period of time, from fat to fit and slim. I showed it to my girlfriend (and now my wife) Annie and she said, “If those contestants can transform their bodies, so can you. You’ve got to do it, Jeff…start now!” I didn’t realize it at the time, but what she would say would become the pivotal moment that saved my life.

I ran to get my “before” pictures, then told Ernie what I wanted to do. I only had 19 weeks to make significant changes in every aspect of my life. I gave up all my old habits – including drinking and eating too much – and put myself on a low-glycemic/low-fat diet, which I’ve followed ever since, and the diet program described here forms the basis of Book I started taking supplements and got into an exercise program that I wasn’t really ready for. Honestly, the first few weeks were very difficult: I felt tired, miserable and beat up most of the time. Five mornings a week I woke up at 4:00 am. And went to Ernie’s gym. I had to train very early in the morning so that I could go to the hospital and be in the office by 9am. Ernie taught me how to lift weights, build muscle and strength, eat clean and lose body fat. He showed me how taking small steps can lead to successive big steps. Most importantly, she helped me reach deep within myself and maximize every last bit of my potential. It gave me the desire to set as many goals as possible and gave me the tools to reach those goals in small but precise steps. He taught me the importance of working outside my comfort zone to achieve the changes I needed.

19 weeks is not a long time to make a complete transition and there were many, many days when I thought I wasn’t going to be able to do it. However, slowly I started seeing real results. My LDL (bad cholesterol) went from 164 to 80 and I started feeling better and stronger. But the mirror told the story: Every time I took my “before” photos and compared them to the new me I could see significant changes in my body. After graduating from medical school in 1975, I first fell in love with the way I looked.

I was also obsessed with the connection between what I ate and how I felt. I read everything I could about improving nutrition and began a master’s program in sports nutrition and exercise science at Marywood University in Scranton, Pennsylvania. I took classes with a group of highly motivated 20-somethings, while still practicing full-time family medicine and preparing for the body-for-life challenge. However, for the first time in years I had all the energy I needed to get through those stressful months. Looking back, I enjoyed every single one of them
