Recent scientific evidence shows that there is indeed a difference in calories burned while standing versus sitting, but the difference may not be as big as you think.

The potential health benefits of a standing desk can be considered, especially if you stand behind a computer for more than 8 hours a day.
Let’s talk briefly about the metabolic equivalent of task (MET), which is a measure of your working metabolic rate compared to your resting metabolic rate. You’ve probably seen the acronym “MET” while using a heart machine and thought, “What does that number mean?”
In other words, 1 MET is the energy you expend while resting – your resting basal metabolic rate. Brisk walking will raise your MET to about 5.0, while high-intensity interval training and most sports will raise it to 10.0.
To determine calories burned while standing versus sitting, we simply multiply the MET equivalent value for the activity by body weight (in kilograms) and time (in hours).

To get the theoretical number of calories you burn per hour standing, multiply your body weight in kilograms (1 kg = 2.2 pounds) by 2.3.
Example: an 80 kg (~ 176 lb) person “theoretically” burns about 120 calories per hour sitting at a desk, while standing burns about 184 calories per hour.
The problem with the above method of calculating calories while standing vs. sitting is that the “real world” data is less than the theoretical model.

One study of young, healthy college students found that standing burned about 1.36 calories per minute, while sitting burned about 1.02 calories/minute. This represents a 33% difference in calories burned while standing compared to sitting. A recent study of healthy middle-aged office workers found that standing compared to sitting burned 7.8 to 11.5 percent more calories. Research has shown that for obese and overweight office workers, standing burns an additional 0.16 calories per minute, a 13% increase compared to sitting. Other research has found no significant difference in calories burned while standing compared to sitting.
Ways To Burn Calories Without Exercising
You might think that these studies suggest that you can burn 33% more calories per day standing than sitting at work, but that’s not what they’re telling us.
Although research has found “statistically significant” differences in calories burned while standing versus sitting, they ultimately don’t add up to a significant amount for most people.
At best, switching to a standing desk can help you burn an extra 100 to 200 calories in 8 hours (assuming you don’t sit occasionally). But according to some studies it can be less than 60 calories.
Also remember that 8 hours of work represents a third of your total daily calorie burn. If you work at a computer most of the day, whether sitting or standing, it’s not a physically demanding job. You can burn more energy by exercising regularly and walking throughout the day.

In practice, alternating periods of sitting and standing while working is because a) we are not robots and standing for more than 8 hours is not human, and b) most people take breaks for things like of meetings. eat lunch, use the bathroom, and get a sore foot, etc.
Make no mistake, standing burns more calories than sitting, but a small increase in NEAT will not be significant enough for most people looking to lose weight.

A better (but more expensive) option is to get a motorized standing desk that allows you to quickly convert to a sitting position.
