As I look through the various criteria for ADHD, I often read that impulsivity can be one of the main reasons a mental health professional diagnoses you with ADHD. Our impulsive behavior can be as simple as blurting out comments without thinking, or as life-changing as a rash decision to quit a job and move. But why do some people with ADHD make snap decisions without thinking? 🤔 Is there something in our ADHD brain that makes us more impulsive than others? Let’s take a look at how ADHD affects your sense of impulse control and what to do about it.

When studying the anatomy of the ADHD brain and its associated function, impulse control can be linked to two distinct areas of the brain: the prefrontal cortex and the basal ganglia 🧠. The prefrontal cortex is located just behind our frontal lobes and is responsible for rational decisions such as planning and organization. The basal ganglia, on the other hand, are located at the base of the hypothalamus and control more instinctive decisions such as hunger or the fight-or-flight response.

However, their ADHD symptoms may well be bottled up in their brains, and they struggle on their own. One of the main symptoms of ADHD is attention deficit disorder, making careless mistakes and being easily distracted. Because ADHD can affect our focus and interest, we tend to miss details, misunderstand instructions or ideas that aren’t properly explained, or make the wrong decision without understanding the context.
