A few weeks ago I would have thought it was an oxymoron and would have had no idea what it meant. I listened to the audiobook Rich Dad Poor Dad and the author Robert Kiyosaki said something similar. He got me thinking, am I poor or just broke? I often thought I was poor and it was a really limiting mindset. Very victimized. Being an aspiring entrepreneur and struggling with anxiety and depression while trying to start a business, I thought I didn’t have much money. Money seems to equal success in business, as does failure. When I was young, I made a lot of mistakes with my money. I often regret not making wiser choices when times were easier. I’m 25 now (I’m still young) and I have a family to support. Being a husband and father, not an 18 year old boy, certainly changes everything.

I am 25 years old and I deal with online e-commerce. It’s a small business now, but I know exactly how to turn it into a six-figure annual business. But knowing how not to do it means nothing. Well, I’m in the execution phase, which people call “the grind.” It’s on my mind every day. Constant highs and lows. It’s hard on the brain, but it’s like a workout.
I’m Broke, Baby!
Lately I’ve started to wonder if I’m mentally retarded or if I’m just broken right now. I’m happy that I still came to the conclusion that I have some basic thinking skills. Obviously I couldn’t improve my mind. Last year I worked hard, partly as a contractor and freelancer and partly working on my online business. I fought. The money arrived, but it never seemed to be enough. Payments were not always made on time. My credit was hit. I felt like a fake. Should I be an entrepreneur? I often prefer to reinvest the money in my business instead of paying the bill. Many would say this is irresponsible and I agree with you. I have not decided yet.
Now I sit patiently and wait to resume my daily routine. My wife and I want to buy a house this year. My online business is slowly but surely growing as I currently have some limitations mentally and physically. We are working to rebuild our credit. I intend to return to the world of work to achieve these goals as soon as possible. I’m so ambitious and often feel stuck. Just my interruption. Even though my business is small, I don’t have much to show for my struggles. Not yet, anyway. I have to remind myself that everyone is planting the “seed” for my business, whether it appears to be directly making money or not. Every time I add valuable inventory to my online store, I increase its value. Every time I write a blog post, make a video to post on YouTube, and comment on something helpful and encouraging on a stream, I plant a seed. I will grow, I will get land. Every meter I get closer to the end zone. The final zone is every goal I set for myself. There’s no limit to how many times I can reach the end zone. So now I’m a 25 year old entrepreneur, but I’m not poor.
If I persevere, in 4-5 years it looks like it will be 180 degrees different from where I am now, and in 10 years I could have more business. I have 7-9 sources of income. I will be financially independent. I am building my family for long-term prosperity and success. I am much wiser and wiser than I am now. I am mentally strong and physically strong.
So, to answer the question more clearly; What is the difference between poverty and poverty? I think it’s easy. It’s your mind. Being poor is where you live. Being broke means realizing you don’t have much money, but that’s not always the case.
