Jobs For Canadians In Brazil – On January 19, 2021, Ford announced its intention to close three factories in Brazil, resulting in 5,000 workers losing their jobs. IndustriALL calls on Ford to review the decision and discuss other solutions with the unions.

After 102 years of building and selling cars in Brazil, Ford announced that it intends to close three plants in Taubaté (São Paulo), Camaçari (Bahía) and Horizonte (Ceará).

The decision will leave 5,000 Ford workers out of a job and affect about 70,000 jobs in Brazil’s supply chain.

Groves That Grow Jobs

The announcement by Ford to close its São Bernardo plant in 2019 came without discussions with unions or local authorities and amid the global pandemic that has affected Brazil. The decision is a blow to the workers, their families and their communities.

In a letter from the IndustriALL Global Union, General Secretary Valter Sanches asked Ford President and CEO James D. Farley Jr. to reconsider the decision and join the unions in discussing other solutions.

Sanches emphasized that the decision is a clear violation of the international agreement signed with IndustriALL in April 2012. The GFA stipulates that adequate information and consultation are a prerequisite for successful communication between management and employee representatives.

The union in Brazil issued a joint statement calling for protests this week outside Ford dealerships. Ford unions have already organized demonstrations and meetings with management and say they won’t back down.

Canada made the list of the top 10 countries for the number of jobs in hydropower, but it was not combined with the other three renewable energy technologies, according to new international statistics.

Harvest Full Of Jobs

Although Canada accounts for just two percent of the world’s workforce, it had one of the world’s 10 largest jobs in electricity in 2019, the Abu Dhabi-based International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) said.

Canada did not make the rest of IRENA’s top 10 jobs list, for solar photovoltaic (PV), hydropower or wind power, released on 30 September. The agency’s data shows the entire sector has 61,130 jobs in Canada, or 0.5. percent of the world’s 11.5 million jobs in renewable energy.

The numbers show Canada needs to move quickly to reduce the climate crisis, including by joining trade blocs that put a price on high-carbon products, the Victoria-based BC Sustainable Energy Association argued after reviewing the IRENA report. The Canadian Renewable Energy Association also said it showed the country was not taking advantage of job opportunities.

But other cleantech advisers say there’s more to the story. When comparing clean jobs, a broader perspective is useful, argued Clean Energy Canada, pointing to the recent Ford-Unifor deal, which includes a $1.8 billion commitment to produce electric vehicles in Oakville, Ont.

Salary, Flexibility, Inspiration: What Workers Want Varies By Nation

Natural Resources Minister Seamus O’Regan also announced that the number of renewable workers from IRENA is the same as the population of the world. “Although Canada’s share of the world’s clean energy market is about the same as our population, we produce nearly 2.7 percent of the world’s primary renewable energy supply. . . With just 0.5 percent of the world’s population, we punch above our weight,” said O “Regan’s secretary, Ian Cameron.

Canada joined IRENA in January 2019 and the country is described by the association as an “important market” for renewable energy for a long time.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a new $10 billion “growth plan” to be administered by Canada’s International Development Bank, which includes “$2.5 billion for clean energy to support construction and storage.
