Hip hop is not just a dance that was born in the Bronx, Queens or Brooklyn neighborhoods where the African American and Latin American communities of the United States were located in the 70s.

Defining little by little the elements that were part of Hiphop and simplifying it, we can divide it into rap, graffiti and its dances, the most obvious breakdance, but later added pop, locking, arockin’, etc.

Therefore, all dances derived from hip-hop have a street element, which is an important part of improving this discipline, gaining public approval, attracting attention, and not so much the technique of classical dance.

In dance, hip hop really mixes the passions of jazz, breakdance, afro rhythms or contemporary dance. They emphasize intense, sometimes sudden and expressive movements, especially using the arms and torso.

So we can also call the name Street dance, a term used to describe dance styles of social dance, where we have a lot of improvisation and contact with the viewer. If there’s one thing I’m extremely passionate about (apart from coffee), it’s the magical world of dance and its power to transform lives. Today I want to talk about a common question we hear from parents: Should my child be hip? hop join or break classes? Let’s dive into the rhythmic beats and twists of these two amazing dance styles to help you make the best choice for your little star.

If you haven’t met me yet, I’m Vanessa, the founder of V-Hub Dance. I have been teaching dance to children and adults in Brisbane for over a decade. But that’s enough about me, let’s dive in!

Hip hop is more than a dance style; It’s a culture, a form of expression as diverse as our wonderful Brisbane community. In our hip hop classes for kids, your child can explore different rhythms and beats, learn new moves, and most importantly, express their unique personality. It’s all about creativity, storytelling and having a taste of dancing to really cool music.

Breek, sometimes called ‘breakdancing’, is a dynamic street dance that mixes creativity with athleticism. It originated in the streets of New York and has developed into a magical art with its footwork, freezing and power moves. In our free time classes, our children learn the basics, but more than that they will learn about resilience, discipline and the joy of movement.

Each class at V-Hub Dance is a universe of its own. In hip hop there is an emphasis on individuality and interpretation. Our instructors encourage students to bring their own flavor to the routine. On the other hand, classes focus more on break-dance techniques and strength building. But don’t worry, there’s still plenty of room for personal preferences!

Differences Between Ballet And Hip Hop

Dance is not only physical, but also a daily practice! Hip hop improves coordination, agility and cardiovascular health. It also sharpens cognitive skills such as memory and concentration. Great for cutting, building strength and flexibility with its acrobatic elements. But it also teaches children about perseverance and problem solving.

Hip hop is perfect for children who love to groove to the latest tunes and express themselves through movement. If your child is creative, likes to improvise and enjoys dancing in a group and enjoying a variety of music, hip hop might be their jam.

Does your child like a physical challenge? Are they fascinated by acrobatics? Then a break up might be more appropriate. It is ideal for children who enjoy athletic activities and are not afraid to push their limits.

Parents, your role is crucial! Whether it’s hip hop, breaking, or any other style, your support and encouragement will mean the world to your little dancers. Celebrate their progress, be there for their performances, and most of all, let them know it’s okay to try, falter, and try again.

Children love to dance and activities can be fun to teach them some easy steps. Simple movements of everyday life can be developed into dance steps with proper guidance.

You have to start by encouraging children and providing a safe environment for them to dance. In the beginning, children may trip/fall when learning to dance. A thick carpet or rug can prevent physical injuries. Nowadays even hip hop dance is taught to children.

As mentioned earlier, improving the simple movements of everyday life leads to the refinement and development of complex steps. The different movements that can be taught to children at the beginning include jumping, marching, leaping, spinning, galloping etc.

These movements must then be sequenced to bring some order to them. For example, a bunny hop can be performed by jumping back and forth. Similarly, electric slide is performed by sliding from side to side. Children can be taught different directional movements such as Eensy Weensy Spider, Hokey Pokey, etc.

Beginners should use simple and innovative dance moves that are easy to understand. One such fun move is the shopping cart move. In this dance step, children imitate the act of pushing an imaginary car and loading it. Two people can push the cart and put other things in it. Children spin like a sprinkler to the sprinkler’s dance. One hand is stuck doing this step.

It is an interesting dance form that children enjoy. The steps of this dance are divided into 2 parts. The first part has 16 beats. In the first four beats, do not include actions to be performed ‘mouth’ by snapping the thumb and fingers together. For the next four beats, make wings by bending the elbows and placing the hands near the armpits.

In these four strokes, the hands are kept at waist level by flapping the wings four times. During the 9th to 12th pulse, the hips are rotated 4 times. The last four strokes from 13 to 16 consist of four putts. The steps performed in these 16 beats must be repeated four times. The second part of this dance involves connecting opposite elbows with dance partners and jumping in a circular motion. After the music changes, the children must go back to the first part.

The children will perform this dance move in pairs. The patty cake polka dance includes steps such as touching the floor with the heels and toes, sliding from side to side, clapping and finally moving in a circle. In the first four beats of this dance, the heel and the toe touch the floor one after the other. Partners must touch the heels of the opposite legs at the same time; If the first partner touches the heel of the left foot, the other partner must do so with the right foot. After performing the front heel movement twice, both partners should slide in the direction of the foot being used; This movement should be done 3 times. Then all the steps above must be repeated with the other leg. After performing the foot movements, the dancers must tap their right, left and hands three times. This action should be followed by tapping the thighs three times. The final step of this dance move is to connect the elbows and move them in a circle for four consecutive beats.
