Last 15 Stanley Cup Winners – With the 2015 Stanley Cup set to be unveiled any day now, I’ve gone back in time to see what each club wore when they got their hands on Lord Stanley’s fancy mug. This image dates back to the creation of the National Hockey League in 1918, and the Stanley Cup has been awarded since 1893.

The bad stats are below the image and you can click on the hi-res image to see the details, including the correct team patches for that year (read the note above). The photo shows the uniform in which the team won the Stanley Cup.

Note. We’ve updated this image to include 2015. Check out the new version at the bottom of this post!

Warning: Below are some weird facts and statistics. I’m only interested in this:

First, it’s important to note that this is not an easy or quick way to find out whether the home or away team has won the Cup in league history. Teams went through eras where teams could wear anything at any time: home dark, then home white, then home dark, all the way to the Wild West of the 1960s.

As you can see in the picture, the first Stanley Cup patch was worn in the 1989 Finals between the Calgary Flames and the Montreal Canadiens, when both teams wore shoulder patches. In 1990, he was transferred to the front, where he remains today. The New York Rangers have opted to wear the shoulder patch for jersey lettering – they’ve done it twice, in 1994 and again in 2014.

The Canadiens won in 1976 with Olympic patches, the Flames won for the first time in 1989 with a Cup Final patch, and Detroit won in 1998 with a memorial shoulder patch.

The last team to win the Cup with a special patch other than the Cup Final was the New Jersey Devils in 2000, who wore a league-wide “NHL2000” patch when they lifted the Cup. The last winning team to wear a special patch was the 1998 Detroit Red Wings, who had the patch in support of three members of the 1997 Cup-winning team who were unable to participate that season due to a shoulder injury in a car accident. . Other patch winners include the 1992 Pittsburgh Penguins (25th Anniversary + Commemorative Patch), 1980 New York Islanders (1980 Olympics), 1976 Montreal Canadiens (Olympics again), and then the 1952 Detroit Red Wings (City of Detroit) . . ) and 1943 (patches dedicated to the Second World War). All these patches are shown in the main image above.

Three Stanley Cups were won by teams wearing alternate jerseys: the 1932 Toronto Maple Leafs forced their opponent to wear plain white “Clash” jerseys, while the New York Rangers wore only blue jerseys that day; The Leafs won the Cup again in 1967, wearing special uniforms in honor of Canada’s centennial (they wore them continuously in 1968 and 1969); In 1999, the Dallas Stars won the Cup wearing their alternating black and green star uniforms in Buffalo, and like the Leafs, the team used these jerseys consistently the following season.

The last eight Stanley Cups have been awarded to teams wearing black or white uniforms. The last team to wear something else while winning the Cup was the 2006 Carolina Hurricanes, who wore red at home when they beat the Edmonton Oilers. You have to go back six years to the New Jersey Devils in 2000, before the Hurricanes. That streak could end if the Chicago Blackhawks win six games or the Tampa Bay Lightning win seven later this week.

This is quite strange… The only teams in the 21st century (2001-2014) to win the cup in white jerseys were in the north, and the teams that won in dark jerseys were in the south. Weird and wild stuff, kids. That trend will likely continue in 2015 if Tampa Bay wins Game 6.

Every team that won the Cup from 1994 to 1995 had either black somewhere in their color scheme or the Detroit Red Wings. This continues in 2015.

No NHL team has ever won the Stanley Cup wearing the yellow jersey, and the Boston Bruins, Pittsburgh Penguins and Calgary Flames all came close to winning the cup while wearing the yellow jersey. Purple or turquoise were never worn (as a base or decoration) during a Stanley Cup Final victory. Again, this happened in 2015.

Although a relatively high percentage of teams wear it as their primary dark color, no team has won the Cup in a blue jersey in 25 years, with the Edmonton Oilers last doing so in 1990. Before the Oilers, there were the 1982 New York Islanders and then the 1967 Toronto Maple Leafs. Tampa Bay can end this drought if they win the Stanley Cup, and they won’t be able to wear blue until 2015.

About these Oilers… Wayne Gretzky, their star in the 1980s, won four Stanley Cups during his Oilers career without ever playing in the colors. The Oilers won a bowl trip in 1990, two years after the trade with the Los Angeles Kings. In contrast, his rival Mario Lemieux never won the Cup (as a player or owner) while at home. The Blackhawks haven’t won the Cup at home since 1938, another streak they hope to end in Game 6.

Sticking with the Oilers, they dominated the second half of the 1980s, while the New York Islanders took center stage in the first half. What do these two have in common? These are the only clubs in the league that wear blue and orange kits, which leads to this strange statistic:

Of the cups played between 1980 and 1990, *nine* (81%) went to teams wearing blue and orange; of
