In the decade between 1971 and 1980, it was estimated that there were an average of 1,101 blackouts in the United States, including 491 consumer product blackouts each year. As the GFCI requirement increases, the number of electricians decreases significantly. Between 2011 and 2020, there was an annual average of 246 electricians, including 41 for consumer electronics. There has been an 80% reduction in electrocutions since the introduction of GFCI protection in bathrooms, and a 93% reduction in consumer product electricity use between 1975 and 2020. Since 1978, the year the average American home was built, GFCI requirements have increased to include six additional outlets in the home.
