Not Losing Weight Intermittent Fasting – Intermittent fasting can be a great way to lose weight as part of a healthy lifestyle. However, some mistakes that can be made in prolonged fasting can lead to unwanted weight gain. If you wonder why you don’t lose weight with intermittent fasting, this post is for you.

If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll know that I follow an intermittent fasting regimen (called IF). This has been a big part of why I feel incredibly healthy at this point in my life.

But it’s not always like this. I struggled with my weight for years (see article here) and didn’t feel good about myself at all. Sometimes I fast and wonder why I’m gaining weight when it seems like I’m doing everything I should be doing.

Intermittent Fasting Plus Keto For Weight Loss

If you feel the same, you are not alone. I get asked this question a lot and can only help with my own experience and what the research suggests.

Generally, people think they need to fast just to lose weight, but fasting has more to do with time than with caloric intake or eating habits.

We’ll take a look at it now and let you know where things can go wrong. I will also give you the information you need to be successful.

I’ll go into more detail in my post Does Fasting Work for Weight Loss? A beginner’s guide to intermittent fasting, but here’s a quick review:

How Much Weight Can You Lose With Intermittent Fasting?

A lot depends on your body and how it reacts to fasting. Some people can lose 10 pounds a month, while others lose one or two pounds a week. My advice is to do a weight loss of 1-2 kilos per week, because this is a healthy and sustainable weight loss goal.

Many studies have shown that IF helps with weight loss. One, in particular, concluded that IF participants lost between 4.6% and 13.0% of their body weight over a period of 8 weeks to a year. In fact, those who exercise (see my post on the best time to exercise here) had better results compared to those who didn’t.

Let’s look at why you most likely won’t lose weight with intermittent fasting. I have divided it into four points, which I list below.

Paying attention to what you eat is just as important, if not more so, than when you eat. You see, if you eat a lot of carbohydrates and high-calorie, sugar-filled foods, you will definitely gain weight. You should eat what your body needs in calories.

Why Am I Not Losing Weight?

If you don’t know what your body needs, check out my post on how to calculate your macros.

It may surprise you, but poor nutrition can also cause problems. If you don’t eat enough in your eating period, you increase your chances of overeating in your next period due to hunger. You will be hungry, you may start eating and not stop.

Additionally, the body stores energy to protect itself in the form of stored fat. Your body will feel the need to gain weight and may store those extra pounds as fat instead of lean muscle mass. So, calculate your macros to see how many calories your body needs (it’s not that complicated to calculate your macros, trust me) and still fuel your body while losing weight.

If you find it difficult not to eat while fasting and it hurts when you eat, try reducing your fasting time from 16 hours to 14 or even 12. Come back in 16 hours. The most important thing is to eat well when you eat and eat well to fuel your body.

Dear Doctor: Intermittent Fasting A Winner For Weight Loss Or A Diet Dud?

Whether it’s vegan protein, protein powder, or animal sources like lean meat, fish, and chicken, protein is an important component. Protein is important for muscle mass and recovery after exercise. It is also good for the bones.

Protein also fills you up and helps you move from the fasting window to the eating window. So instead of loading up on refined carbs and sugar, opt for lean, tasty proteins! It will take you a long time to digest food and you will remain full until the time of fasting.

As I mentioned before, eating junk food during the feeding period will not help you lose weight during fasting. Of course, it will be more difficult.

I recommend eating healthy, whether you are on an intermittent fasting regimen or not. Remember that eating healthy does not stop people from eating. You can still get lots of amazing food, and desserts too!

Remember that your overall health (and how your body feels) is more important than the speed at which you gain weight. Good speed results, yes. And remember the long game! Maintenance is key.

It is also important to be patient with yourself. My journey has had many ups and downs, to the point that I enjoy the scale. It wasn’t until my son Hunter was born that I finally found balance and self-acceptance.

Adults can lose between 0.55 and 1.65 pounds per week (or 0.25 to 0.75 kg) with prolonged fasting and no fad diets, and it’s great if you use proper nutrition, healthy habits, and exercise.

Again, focus on developing healthy habits rather than speeding up. There was a time when I was limited to only 1100 calories a day. Yes, it’s a little more than I want. There was a time when I was worried about food and lost half a kilo a day.

Yes, sleeping during intermittent fasting is considered fasting! Because you sleep, you don’t eat calories, which puts you on a complete fast. Perfectly simple!
