The direction of a gyro compass point is independent of the Earth’s magnetic proximity and depends on the characteristics of the gyroscope and the Earth’s rotation.

Gyrocompass, a navigational instrument that uses a gyroscope to continuously push to find the correct direction to true (geographical, theological) north. It works by finding a balanced direction under the combined effects of gravity and the Earth’s daily rotation. Therefore, it is not affected by magnetic interference caused by mineral deposits, steel structures or electrical circuits. These features make gyrocompasses an important navigation device on ships and submarines. It was used extensively on mining vessels on the Great Lakes as a bearing reference for longship gun and torpedo control, and as a clear compass for navigation by any vessel. The speeds of hundreds of knots associated with circular craft have a strong influence on the characteristics of the north direction and are therefore unsuitable for circular craft.
Although Leon Foucault first demonstrated the clear effect of the Earth’s rotation on a gyroscope in 1852, the ability to create sufficiently accurate units was not available until the first decade of the 20th century. The first gyrocompass that fell into the sea was born. Founded in 1908 by the German company Hermann Anschütz-Kaempfe. This was largely due to the efforts of Max Schuler, who developed the basic principles of the ship’s gyrocompass. It’s an amazing piece of mechanical genius. In 1911, the American Elmer Sperry easily made a gyrocompass. In England, Sidney George Brown and John Perry of Sperry developed the gyrocompass in 1916 along similar lines. The American Arma Corporation later produced an improved version of the Anschütz.
All gyrocompasses operate on the same basic principles. They differ in the method of supporting the gyroscopic element (the rotating wheel) and the use of a pendulum required for a north-facing property, and the way in which the oscillations are cast, creating a north-facing unit.

One form of gyroscope is a wheel mounted on a sphere so that the direction of the axis of rotation is almost free to rotate. Rotation allows continuous use of the mass or inertia properties of the material in the wheel, thus resulting in large gyroscopic motion or relatively large inertia in an average sized wheel. An important property of a practical gyroscope is its angular momentum – the product of rotation about its axis and inertia. This quantity is a vector because it has both direction and magnitude. The angular momentum vector can be conveniently expressed by bending the fingers of the right hand in the direction of rotation of the spindle and extending the thumb in the direction of the angular momentum vector. The golden angle is roughly parallel to the axis of rotation of a practical gyrocompass.

In the same way, the torque (torque or transformation) is directed through the outstretched thumb of the right hand, while the fingers of the curled hand are in the direction of the rotation it is trying to produce. The basic principle of a gyroscope is this: when a torque is applied to the gyroscope, the rotor (or precession) will try to anchor itself to the torque. Precession is a relation to inertial space – that is, a space that does not move with “stars”. Note that since the Earth rotates every day, it is not part of inertial space. The amount of precession is directly proportional to the amount of torque and inversely proportional to the amount of angular momentum. When no torque is applied, the spindle axis remains stationary in inertial space; if it is aimed at a star, it will stay at the star, so that one end of the Earth’s axis appears to an observer to rise one day in the east and set in the west . When an applied torque attempts to rotate the gyroscope about its vertical axis, the axis of rotation will increase or decrease as it attempts to rotate perpendicular to it. Similarly, a torque applied about a horizontal axis will cause that axis to rotate before the vertical axis.
A gyrocompass is a gyroscope that balances a pendulum mass so that it rotates at right angles to its axis. In normal operation, when the pendulum decreases, the axis of the spine is usually horizontal and pointing north. Consider a gyrocompass that starts with a horizontal axis of rotation and points a few degrees northeast. The Earth’s rotation then raises the axis of rotation above the horizon, as seen by an observer on Earth (the horizon drops below the axis of rotation, but initially in still space). This action causes a horizontal bend to the west due to the effect of gravity on the pendulum. Axis of rotation, basic laws of gyroscope, precession
