This interview was conducted in November 2017 when Dr. Quinn recently published his book Corporate Wealth and Power from Signature Books. Podcast, I’m so excited. I have a very rare one: Mike Quinn Historian Mike Quinn is in Salt Lake City. So, would you like to introduce yourself to the audience? Not everyone knows Mormon history and may not know who you are. Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Michael: 00:00:52 I was born in California, and when I was there, I always said it was a mission field. I became interested in Mormon history as a hobby when I was 16 years old, and later during my military service and after graduating from BYU with a degree in English literature. When I became a graduate student, I had time to reflect on what I wanted to do as a graduate student. He served in the army for three years. And because my hobby occupied my time, I went to the University of Utah to get a master’s degree in history. Then I went to Yale from there. But before that, I was Leonard’s research assistant and writer. Errington as Church Historian After I completed my Ph.D. in History from Yale University. Three months later, I got a job on the BYU campus in the history department. And after 12 years, he became an independent historian and independent scientist in that field. Besides the occasional meeting…I have a two-year appointment at the University of Southern California. I was then assigned to Yale University for a year. It was his last academic appointment, decades ago.
GT: 00:02:24 Oh, good, for those of you who don’t know the basics. I know a chapter you wrote in the 1980s, I believe it was in a Maxine Hanks book.
Michael: 00:02:39 Yeah, it actually came out in 1992. Titled “Mormon Women Held the Priesthood since 1843,” it caused some controversy.
Michael: 00:02:56 Maxine was ostracized and I was kicked out and she specifically told Aisya that she was going to be kicked out because of her book. And I was told—I was given three things that showed my apostasy. The list prepared by the stake president and the first item on the list is the essay.

GT: 00:03:23:29 So, something that most people would think is a little unusual. I know I listened to your Radio West interview earlier this week. And you said you still believe in Mormonism, so you still believe in a church where some people ostracize you?
Michael: 00:03:44 I’m a seventh generation Mormon. Nothing can take that away from me. But, you know, my kids are eighth-generation Mormons, and there’s another thing about Mormons that they talk about in the third person. They don’t care about the church, so the fact that I’m Mormon doesn’t define my faith. My faith is very simple. But this, I think, fails to understand that many members of today’s church were, in some ways, 19 years old.
Tenth century Mormon believers believe that Joseph Smith, by the grace and power of God, met with angels and translated the Book of Mormon. I believe that there was a seer stone then, and that since Joseph Smith through the current president of the Church, the leaders of the Church have been called by divine prophets, seers, and revelators who are authorized to receive divine revelation.
Michael: 00:04:47 But they don’t always do that. Sometimes they are too careless. And don’t look for that revelation right away. But in my opinion, they have the right and duty to acknowledge the disclosures. I don’t agree with all of the church’s policies, and I strongly disagree with some. Until then, though, I’m not looking for a boycott. But the boycott freed me from defending policies that I disagree with, and to this day. So I keep my personal faith. In some ways, I am like a saint from the later Middle Ages. Ever since I was a child, I had a feeling that you and I were together. God against the world and against God. And my relationship with him has always been great. But the reason I always loved going to sacrament meeting and growing up in Sunday school was receiving Holy Communion at every opening service.

Michael: 00:06:00 That has always been important to me. This is the one thing I really miss besides the temple. I was a temple worker in many ways. When I was at BYU, I was a church worker. which workers are scheduled Therefore, the sacrament is no longer received at least once every Sunday. And attend as you do in the temple every week. This is a big loss. This is something I think about all the time. But I’m a mystery person so I’m fine, don’t worry about my relationship with God. But I am no longer a member of the Church of the Scriptures. But I am persistent – nothing can stop it. I believe what I believe.
Michael: 00:07:00 I am, but I’m not a Latter-day Saint in the sense that I’m not part of the LDS church, so if people want to adjust their language and ask if I’m LDS, I’ll say that. I am not a member. But I’m a Mormon.
Michael: 00:07:16 I go to many synagogues and synagogues, and I love the people in the Christian community as much as I love the people in the Jewish synagogue. I went to a Jewish synagogue every Friday and then attended LDS services. I love the faith and heritage of being a part of a synagogue. Or the Jews said they went to the temple. But I was never comfortable with other friendships. And I don’t want organized religion. In order to maintain my relationship with God, I was invited but never seriously considered joining any fellowship.
GT: 00:08:06 Well, that’s interesting, I’ll make a little confession in my sermon. I went to South Carolina. My friend and I went to the synagogue for about a month. Friday nights are so much fun. So I had to see the rabbi. He is a very good friend.

Michael: 00:08:20 That’s great. Unless you’re trying to go Hasidic or Orthodox, you’re one of the goyim, but I had a lot of fun with it when it first came out as a teenager. Attending a Reform synagogue was the only one in the town or city where I grew up. But then, when I went to the military every week, it was a conservative synagogue. But they welcomed me, gave me beautiful silk trinkets to attend the ceremony, and often invited me to their Bar Mitzvahs. And they will invite me there. And they are really nice people. I appreciate the hospitality of the Jews I have known for years. But I also enjoy fellowship with Muslims, Catholics, and atheists. So I was exposed to different religions, professions and religious ideologies. I gained a broader understanding of who God loves and who He doesn’t. I don’t think He likes anyone. He loves us all. He wept for many of us. People are the majority and often cry for some people. But when you think so, I feel obliged to be a sinner.
