OK, now it’s time to take a deep breath, first of all. It looks like Auston Matthews will be playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight. Matthews led the Leafs in scoring during the regular season, scoring 107 points over another player who missed time in that series. William Nylander had 98 points in the regular season, but missed the first three games of the series. In fact, the last game Matthews played, Game 4, was the only game in the series where both players matched each other. So with the return of Nylander and Matthews, as well as the speed of their deep pieces like Max Domi and Tyler Bertuzzi, the Leafs should perform well offensively. That being said, it was a low-scoring series for the Leafs. However, the importance of having two great scorers in the lineup is huge. Between Matthews’ three-point performance in Game 2 and Nylander’s two goals for the Leafs in Game 6, the team will be taking advantage of every break they can get in the game. Finally, first up, Nick Robertson plays his second straight match against Noah Gregor.

– After a successful return against Edmonton, TJ Brodie is averaging 21:07 per game in seven games and has five assists in that time. His seven-game average ice time ranks fourth among Leafs defensemen. Morgan Reilly is first, Timothy Liljegren (in his two games) is second, and Jake McCabe is third. His stoppage average is 2:56 per game, with McCabe leading the way.
Brodie’s spot in the lineup has been in question given his play and interceptions, which may be pushing him down the lineup, but he’s still getting great minutes every night. It’s rare for a player to be healthy or finish in the top three defensively day after day.
– Against the Panthers, Ryan Lomberg took a penalty for a questionable tackle on Jake McCabe. The Leafs didn’t like the hit and a riot broke out. McCabe blocked his teammates, realizing that the team was starting to play on the power play.
Will The Leafs Be Without Matthews For Game 7, What About Woll?
One of McCabe’s greatest strengths is his temperament – he plays like he’s in a bad mood – but sometimes it’s a double-edged sword. Last season in the playoffs, he was physical at times and lost position at times, chasing shots rather than making plays during the game.
It was nice to see him down to earth in an important match against an opponent. He knows full well that they will face the Panthers again before the end of the season (and possibly play them in the first round of the playoffs) and he knows how to pick numbers.
– When we discussed the Leafs’ scoring depth a few weeks ago, I mentioned that they probably wouldn’t have a 20-goal scorer outside the top four, but Tyler Bertuzzi remains attractive and is now 19 (and there are a lot of suspects in the first place because the goals were canceled).
Given his improved production, we thought we would see a noticeable jump in his ice time compared to the start of the season, but that is not the case. Here’s his average time on ice by month:

Bertuzzi also started the season with Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner and then played with the red-hot William Nylander for many months, so that doesn’t mean he lacks quality teammates. Some of them are natural regressions; Early on, he gets plenty of good opportunities without missing, and finally the advantage is in his favor (he shot 28.6% in March). But he also looks comfortable and settled in the team now.
On Matthews’ goal against Montreal, Bertuzzi was very comfortable cutting the puck off the boards at the blue line and flowing from there, jumping behind the net and trying to make a move. At first he felt very uncomfortable holding the puck and trying to make plays.
It’s an adjustment for Toronto – and it’s an adjustment to playing with teammates of Matthews’ caliber – but he looks to be feeling very good right now. He was a player the Leafs always thought they would sign for at least a few months in a row.
– Bertuzzi’s strong play – and subsequent return to the lineup – has made life much easier for Matthew Neese, who, as a rookie, no longer has to play against and with elite players every night. At times it affected him and his play when he had difficulty clearing the puck or making a play. Nese has scored six points in the last six games (he was scoreless only in the game against Tampa), and his average during that time was just 11:28. This is the best part of his production this season.

The size and capabilities of the knees shine more than others when facing weaker competition. He surpassed Dmitry Kulikov in goals twice against the Panthers.
