But sciatica may be new to you. The term is widely used to describe pain associated with the sciatic nerve running down the back of the leg. People describe sciatica as aching, aching, shooting, or burning. You may also have numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, or reflexes in the affected leg. In mild cases, the pain may spread only to the thighs, but in severe cases, it may be felt up to the legs.
There are two main types of sciatica: mechanical, when a bony bump or herniated disc presses on the spine, and compression, when pressure is caused by injury, pregnancy, infection or other conditions.
