You need those electrolytes! When I was pregnant with Emmy, I drank a lot of water to help her leg cramps and it worked wonders. Who knew the same thing would help breast milk production?! Try to drink at least 20 oz a day! It’s also a great mix of endless water to drink! Rumor has it that red Gatorade works best, but I always stick to blue and it gets the job done.

Your breast pump is probably one of your best friends. You’re about to get a lot closer. How to hang at least 20 minutes every hour. It was my habit. After the baby was fed, I would wait an hour to an hour and a half and then pump for at least 20 minutes. When the milk stopped coming, I waited at least 5 minutes to stimulate the next hole. I would do this after every meal of the day for 48 hours.

At first it was not very encouraging. I got a total of 2 oz. But by day 2 I pumped a total of 5 ounces and was up to 6-7 ounces that night. Another rule I would always follow was during morning feedings with Emmy. Morning milk is rich and high in protein, so babies eat less at this time. Since I’m feeding the baby, the discharge comes much faster and feels stronger than when I’m pumping. I get 6 ounces from one breast in his 10 minute breakfast. It takes a bit of coaxing to get the baby moving and the breast pump up, but it works wonders.

Other fun tips: Always try to be close to your baby when pumping. It definitely helps your body go into maternity mode and boosts production. Think positive thoughts! No two moms are the same and it may take more or less time to get you back to where you want to be. But stick with it! A little person calling you mommy is the best motivation in the world!
