According to the latest National Hurricane Center (NHC) advisory, Hurricane Lee has maximum sustained winds of 115 mph and slightly higher gusts, making it a Category 3 on the hard Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale.
And for the first time in Lee’s history, land was included in the forecast cone on Monday. Nantucket, Massachusetts, is at the northwest end of the forecast cone, while Boston was briefly at the edge of the cone in Monday evening’s NHC forecast, but moved back outside the cone in Monday evening’s update.
The entire Maine coast still remains inside the forecast cone, according to Monday night’s NHC forecast update, although the current storm is forecast to fall below hurricane strength by late Saturday night.
While Lee is expected to move slowly as key currents weaken, dangerous swells and rip currents are beginning to occur across much of the US East Coast and will continue throughout the week.

Beachgoers in Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, have been warned about potentially dangerous conditions this week.
According to the Cape Hatteras National Seashore’s Facebook page, visitors are urged to avoid swimming in the ocean until conditions improve.
“Large breaking waves, life-threatening rip currents, coastal erosion, flooding and coastal flooding are all possible,” CHNS said in a Facebook post. “These hazardous conditions will continue beyond this weekend.”
Fox hurricane expert Brian Norcross said Lee is likely to track between the U.S. East Coast and Bermuda, although its exact path north is unclear.

Computer models predict Lee will stay out of the Eastern Seaboard, and some indicate that the Mid-Atlantic and Eastern Seaboard may also feel the storm’s impacts.
“A dip in the jet stream on Friday is expected to pass over Lee, paving the way for an unstable bubble to the north to follow the storm’s path before another dip occurs,” Norcross said. And the storm may begin to see additional light air on its journey north due to the approaching storm.
But while the NHC’s latest forecast now has Lee’s peak wind speeds slowing as it moves northward this weekend, the storm is expected to grow in size “and the risks will be far from home — hurricanes activity is increasing,” and those in the North-East should be developed. The storm continued in a northwesterly direction and began to slow over the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. The NHC said Lee would remain broadly strong for the next few days.
The NHC said Lee is moving northwest near 7 mph, and is expected to move slowly west-northwest to northwest over the next few days, then move through the center. Will rotate towards north.
On its current track, Lee is expected to pass near west of Bermuda within a few days. The storm is then expected to pass off the coast of New England and approach Nova Scotia by the end of the week.

There are currently no watches or warnings in effect for the landmass, but the NHC said interests in Bermuda should monitor Hurricane Lee’s progress.
The storm gained momentum very quickly on Wednesday, going from a Category 1 hurricane with winds of 80 mph on Wednesday night to a Category 5 hurricane with winds of 165 mph 24 hours later.
The storm intensified into a hurricane on Friday, losing some of its strength and downgrading it to a Category 3. Lee fell to a Category 2 hurricane on Saturday, but reactivated into a major hurricane on Sunday afternoon. Lee is expected to continue strengthening as it slowly moves toward the western Atlantic.
