Students are asked to complete 23-25 reading questions that focus on rhetorical analysis and 20-22 writing questions that focus on reviewing vocabulary, syntax, and other grammar concepts. The number of free questions remains the same, but they are now scored using an analysis rubric instead of a comprehensive rubric.
The AP® English Language and Composition test takes 3 hours and 15 minutes. Students will have 1 hour to complete the multiple choice section (45 questions) and 2 hours and 15 minutes to complete the free choice section (3 questions).
Because AP® English Language and Composition is a skills-based course, there is no way to know which specific passages or topics might make it onto the official exam.

With the 2020 redesign came new rubrics for the AP® Lang Essay section. Previously, articles were graded on a scale of 0-9 using holistic rubrics. Beginning with the 2019 exam, student essays will be graded using new analytical rubrics. Each essay is worth up to 6 points.
Switching from a holistic rubric to an analytical rubric can be difficult, especially if you’ve already taken another AP® English class and are used to the holistic version. But the best thing about an analysis rubric is that it tells you exactly what to include in your essay to get maximum points.
Think of the new rubrics as a guide to getting a 6 on each essay. Below we will spend some time breaking down each element of each section, but first let’s look at the point of the article, which is the same in all 3 articles.
Essay turns are all or nothing – you either get a point or you don’t. It is important to study the text of the rubric to make sure you are creating an AP-level essay. Note that you will not receive a point if your essay:

Consider the second point above. Although you may want to include a counterargument in the body of your essay (more on that later), your essay is not the place for it.
The purpose of the counterargument is to refute it and strengthen your argument. Presenting opposing arguments in your essay becomes confusing for the reader and shows that you are not strong in your position, so it is best to save it for the body of your essay.
